Okay one of my biggest pet peeves is when people are all like 'oh, of course you did good on that test. You are soo smart.' or like 'why are you complaining about that test? We all know you are going to get a 90.'
Or even worse: 'hey, you don't mind if I just copy your homework, do you?'
Newsflash: I mind, a lot. Well, I will tell you if I mind. If it's a close friend, I don't really care if they want to copy my homework once or twice. But when it's random people in my class, I just flat out tell them to do their own work.
People seem to have this really dumb idea that I was born smart. Trust me, I was definitely not. How do I get straight 90s? Well, I come home and start my homework, eat dinner, then study more. That's my night. I put a lot of my time and energy into studying and doing schoolwork.
Trust me, if I didn't do my homework I would have failed math. But since I did my homework and sacrificed hanging out with my friends for studying I did well.
But I wasn't born that way. I work hard for the marks I get. So when people dismiss me with a 'it's cuz you're smart' or try and copy my work, of course I get annoyed. I find it disrespectful that people think I'm just going to hand over something I spent a long time on.
It's not just school things. Even sports things, people are all like that person is just naturally good at a certain sport. How do you know? They could have been working on developing the skills for years. Not every talent begins at birth. Most are learned or perfected over time.
I mean, yeah, some people seem like they were born to play soccer or give speeches or whatever, but often things like that are developed over time. You don't just wake up one morning a professional skier.
So stop trying to take advantage of these talents that people have devoted their time to developing. It's annoying, it's rude, it's disrespectful. Maybe put some of your own effort in and you can produce the results you desire. And you'll feel better knowing that you accomplished it yourself.
And people, stand up for yourselves. Don't let anyone treat you like a doormat. If you feel like someone is taking advantage of you, you have the right to say no. You have the right to tell them to do things themselves.
Talent is not born over night. It takes a lot of hard work and effort. And if you have put in that work and effort, then congratulations. You deserve everything that it brings to you.
