Plot Holes

Okay, I get so frustrated when I am reading a story and it is so obvious that the author has not planned anything out.

This is less of a Wattpad thing, because I understand that Wattpad is for amateur authors and I don't expect their stories to be of the same caliber as published books. But when published books have random plot holes... I get very disappointed.

Like... you know those random characters that show up randomly in books? The author made zero mention of them in the beginning of the book but then they magically show up and everything is great!

And nobody seems to care that the character didn't even exist until two pages ago.

It's as if the author wrote themselves into a corner and then they realized they needed a character to do something so they just pulled one out of thin air and plopped them into the story.

The best example I can think of for this is the Gone series by Michael Grant. Now, I actually love this series (mucho thanks to echoavis for introducing me to this series) but I GET SO ANNOYED BY ALL THE RANDOM CHARACTERS. In every single book there are all these random characters introduced and they randomly become important and all the other characters act as if they've known them all the time.

If you've read this series, then I'm talking about Duck, Brittany, Sanjit and Choo... just to name a few.

And it doesn't have to be characters. Sometimes random events occur in books that have zero build up or mention before it happens and I'm left there like what? what? what? Since when was this happening? You feel?

I mean, foreshadowing is a thing, people. It's a literacy technique that I think we all learned in like Grade 7. So maybe people who are publishing their first draft have an excuse for having some plot holes because it is their first draft and they can always go back and add more details later. But published books? No excuses. FIX THE PLOT HOLES

I'm not asking for much. Just introduce the characters a few chapters earlier, or give a realistic reason as to why the characters hadn't met earlier. And do the same with events and things. Okay? Okay. Are we having a The Fault in Our Stars moment here? I think we are. Beautiful.
