Alright, guys. I know that my rant book is typically happy-go-lucky, and it's rated PG because I don't swear in it. Usually I talk about light-hearted topics. I did a rant on Netflix, for gosh sake! Today's topic is going to be a little more serious than normal.
Stereotypes. They are all around us, and every day we fall into their traps.
Pass a person with tons of piercings and tattoos?
Automatically assume they are into rock and roll and robbing corner stores.
The person who sits next to you has the highest average in the class?
They must be horrible at sports.
Some stereotypes even go so far as being racist. I don't want to get too into these, because some people might take it the wrong way. But unfortunately in our world today, people automatically assume they know your whole life story and personality based on the place you were born, or your parents or grandparents were born.
Obviously, stereotypes usually aren't true. Just because someone can solve equations faster than Einstein doesn't mean they can't also dunk on a 10ft. net. And just because someone has tatoos and piercings doesn't mean they can't be into classical music and romantic movies.
So I have a challenge for all of you reading this. Pay attention to what you are thinking when you meet someone new. Trust me, you will realize just how many assumptions you are making about their personality and daily life.
Once you have recognized all the assumptions/opinions you are forming, banish them away and focus on getting to know the person. Then see how their actual personality compares to the picture you were forming in your mind. Comment your experience.
If everyone in the world tried to do this, maybe we wouldn't have all the problems we have today. If we stop making assumptions and stereotyping people, we are giving people a chance to be themselves.
It only takes a few people to make a big difference :)
I hope you enjoyed today's rant. I'm going on vacation this week and I wanted to give you something to enjoy while I'm gone. This is really only the place you are getting new material from me, since I'm focusing on editing my stories instead of writing something new.
Remember to vote if you agree that stereotypes suck,
Comment if you have something to say,
and follow to make my day!
