Max POV
I was walking through the hall when I got slammed into the lockers. "Good morning puppy boy!" David yelled. I exhaled in pain and kept on walking. David has made my life a living hell ever since high school started. He says I have a dog name. As if that's an excuse to treat me like his personal pet. David was now ahead of me in the hall. I saw Blaire at her locker. She glanced over and winked at me. She then stealthily pointed her finger down at the ground and shot water onto the floor. David stepped on it and slipped onto his ass. Everyone around him laughed an he scowled at them. I mouthed 'thank you' to Blaire and she nodded.I was at lunch with the arrows when David showed up again. He snatched my phone off the table and threw it on the floor. "Go on Max. Go fetch." He smirked, and walked away. "I've had about enough of him." Retro stood up. "Stop Retro. It's not worth it." I said and she sat down. David got what was coming to him though. "What the hell? Why's there mold on my sandwich." He groaned. Blaire walked up to me and handed me my phone that coincidentally also had mold on it. I raised an eyebrow. "Oh. Sorry about that." She grew back the mold and I took my phone. Blaire walked off and I shook my head with a smile. "Damn Max. You didn't tell me you had a girlfriend." Bailey smirked. "What? We're just friends." I said. The arrows laughed. "Friends my ass." Retro said. "That's like the millionth time she's saved your ass Max." Connor said. "Who's side are you on dude?" I asked. He shrugged and smiled. "Seriously Max, she likes you. You should ask her out." Bailey suggested. "Blaire? I don't know. I mean, she's nice and pretty and whatever, but she's like... a real woman. Like she doesn't need anybody. She's the most independent person I've ever met. What do I have to offer a girl like her?" I asked. "Your dick?" Riley suggested. We all looked at her stunned. "What?! Oh like you all weren't thinking the same thing!" She exclaimed.
Max's POV
We were out on patrol with our parents when something weird happened. Bailey started glowing. "Woah!" She looked down at her hands in shock. Her palms were letting off light. I started to get really itchy. I started scratching at my arms and my shoulders. "Ugh! What the hell? Why am I so itchy?!" I groaned. The arrows just stared at me in shock. "What?" I asked. "You're glowing." Ella said. I looked down at myself. My whole body is glowing. "Why does it itch!" I yelled. "I'll go get your mom." Retro flew off.Bailey and I went home. "Look at you two late bloomers. I didn't think you'd ever get your powers." Dad smiled. "Why is it so itchy?!" I yelled in pain and annoyance. "Itchy? It shouldn't be itchy." He said. Mom looks nervous. The other arrows are still on patrol. "Astro? Could you scan him? I'm getting worried." Lime said. Astro walked over. "Yeah. Let's see what's going on." She said. She scanned her eyes up and down my body. "Oh man. That's unfortunate." She said. "What? What's unfortunate?" I asked, still scratching. "You're disabled." She shrugged. Bailey laughed and we glared at her. "Sorry. Not funny." She looked down. "What does that mean?" Lime asked. "He's a disabled super. It means that whenever he uses his powers, it could potentially hurt him. It can cause minor things like vomiting, discolored veins, or severe body itching. But it can also cause more major things if he doesn't stop using it. Like certain types of cancer, arthritis, and even some mental disorders." Astro said. Lime looked me in a panic. "Mom I'll be fine." I said, still itching my arm. "Yes actually. He will be. Provided he can stop using his powers for a while, he should be able to heal. Since you just got your powers, the disability isn't permanent yet. I would suggest having your dad take you to the doctor and they can give you something to kick out the problem before it gets worse. Only thing is that this process could potentially take years to complete." Astro told me. That doesn't sound pleasant, but I couldn't ignore the worry on my mom's face. "Ok. Whatever. Let's just do it so I can stop itching." I said.
Blaire's POV
Bailey called me. "Hey. What's up?" I asked. "Max needs your help." she said. I heard a loud thud come from my kitchen and peeked my head in. My moms are arguing about something again. I pulled my head out and went back to my phone. "Right now?" I asked. "Well, we got our powers earlier and it turns out that he's a disabled super. He's able to heal it but only if he stops using his magic for years. When he went to the doctor, apparently he couldn't figure out how to stop using his powers so they gave him this 'power strike' bracelet. It's literally just a stylish power restraining cuff. Anyway he's really upset about it. He left a few hours ago and he hasn't come back." She said. "Oh! Um-" I heard another thud and peeked my head around again. Lea is leaning back against the kitchen counter with her head in her hand and Chloe is frowning sadly. I sighed sadly and pulled my head back to the phone. "Yeah I'll go find him." I said.I put on my super suit and flew out to find Max. I was out for a while before I finally found him. He was just sitting on a roof, staring down at the city. I flew down and sat beside him. "Hey there Maxi" I greeted. He looked over. "Oh. Hey Hurricane. I guess Bailey sent you." He said. "She's worried about you." I said. "Yeah I know. Everyone's worried about me." He groaned. "She told me what happened. I'm sorry you have to go through that." I said. He shrugged. "I just keep picturing my moms face. She was so scared for me. That's the only reason I'm going through with this. I don't want her to worry." He said. I smiled. "That's really sweet Max." I said. "I hate it Blaire. I hate everyone being worried about me all the time. My friends when David bullies me, my parents about this stupid power thing. It's so annoying. And the worst part is that I can't do anything about it." He groaned. I frowned sympathetically. "I know how you feel." I said. He looked at me. "You? But your life is great." He said. "You think so?" I asked with a laugh. He raised an eyebrow. I looked down. "My moms are always fighting. I haven't had a decent conversation with them in months. They spend all their free time just screaming at each other. And I'm so scared... I'm so scared that one day they'll have enough of each other and leave." My eyes started to water and Max grew concerned. "I don't know what I'd do if they got a divorce. So I'm just stuck dealing with their fighting, and there's nothing I can do about it." I cried. "I thought... I thought they only fought when there was a storm." He said. "Yeah!" I laughed. "But that's a metaphor Max. Truth is, there's always a storm in my house." I looked over at him. He frowned. "I'm so sorry Blaire." He said. I shrugged and wiped my tears. "It's fine. I just keep pushing through. I try to have the most fun I can in every day... just so maybe I'll forget what I'm coming home too." I said. He smiled softly. "Well, you always have a place at arrows HQ if you need it." He said. I smiled. "Thanks. And Max, you need to stop thinking about what those other people think. Just because they're worried about you, doesn't mean you have to do what they say." I said. "Thanks Blaire." He said.
"Do you wanna try it out?" I asked. "What do you mean?" He asked. I took his hand reached for the clasp on his bracelet. "No. Don't do that." He pulled away. "You can control it Max. I know you can." I said. "No I can't." He protested. "I believe in you Max. Now you have to believe in yourself." I said. He huffed. "Fine." He groaned. I unclipped his bracelet and he started glowing. "Fuck! It still itches." He groaned. I grabbed his hands. "Don't pay attention to that. Just look at me." I said. He wrapped his hands around mine and I smiled at him. "Promise me you wont tell anyone what I said about my parents." I said. He smiled and nodded. "I promise. I won't tell." He said. He's still glowing. "Max... I have something else to tell you." I said. "What?" He asked. I took a deep breath. "I have a crush on you." I said. He stopped glowing as his face lit up. "Wow. Bailey was right." He smiled. My eye twitched. "I'm gonna kill her." I gritted through my teeth. He laughed. "No. It's ok." he laughed. "Will you go out with me?" I asked. He smiled and nodded. "Yes." He said. I smiled. "Look down." I said. He looked at himself and saw how he wasn't glowing. "You did it!" He said, shocked. "What? Are you doubting me?" I asked. He shook his head. "Never." He smiled.
