Demonic Presence

Cal's POV
Kai sat on her throne with her tail whipping back and forth, while I paced the floor in front of her. "I mean, it's not like I wanted to insult her! Do I come off as rude?!" I exclaimed. Kai scrolled through her phone, casually ignoring me. "It's not like I don't like her girlfriend. I just wish she would talk to me as much as she talks to her!" I kept talking, and Kai just hummed along with me. "Mhm." She didn't even look over. I raised an eyebrow at her, and she didn't even notice. "And you know what? If her girlfriend is so great, then maybe I should dump mine and get a mortal of my own!" I didn't mean that, but I wanted to see if Kai was paying attention. "You can do it, babe." She kept scrolling. "Kai!" I yelled. She glanced over and raised an eyebrow. "You're not listening." I crossed my arms. "Sure I am. I just have better things to do than listen to you yap about nothing. My moms left me as acting queen for the day while they're on their anniversary trip. And also, you'd never break up with me, and I don't even need to see the future to know that." She smirked. I smiled and rolled my eyes. "What do you mean nothing?" I asked. "You are not the most important thing in your sisters' lives, Cal. Not everything is about you! You're offended that Lemmy has an actual life? That's sad, babe. Marlow is a cool girl. We play mobile games together all the time. If Lemmy is happy with her, and enjoys living in the mortal world, then who cares! Let her be. You're looking too far into it." She explained. I walked up to her throne and sat down in her lap. Kai smiled and wrapped her arms around me. "Maybe you're right. I am being crazy. When did things get so complicated?" I asked. "When you decided to mess with mortals." She replied. I groaned. "I blame my mom for that, but yeah. I guess that's true." I giggled.

Flashback
When mom left for lunch with my aunts, I snuck out of the house and ran out into the woods nearby. Sitting at a spinning wheel all day everyday is getting tiring, and it's cramping my hands. I'm so bored at work. I needed a break, so I came out here and sat down by a stream. The water runs gray here, unlike the mortals' blue water. I reached my hand down into the stream and felt the rush of the current. My hand snapped back immediately though when I heard someone walking behind me. "Stupid stupid demons! Ugh! Why are they all so mean?!" I heard. I stood up and looked around for the voice. She actually ran right past me without noticing me, and knelt down by the stream. It was Kai. "If I drown myself now, maybe the lesser half of me will die." She groaned. "That won't work. You can breathe underwater." I said. Her head shot up and she looked back at me. "Cal? What are you doing here?" She asked. "Getting away. Same as you apparently." I walked back to the stream and sat down beside her. "You heard all of that? Or did you just know I'd be here?" She asked. "No, I heard it all. Actually, I'm here to get away from my Fate duties." I explained. "Oh! I'm just trying to get away from school." Kai sighed. "How are you getting bullied? You're the princess of Hell!" I exclaimed. "Like that matters. I'm the first ever half-demon half-goddess, and as far as anyone's concerned, it means that I'm not strong enough to fit into either category." She explained. I laughed at how stupid that was, and Kai raised an eyebrow. "What? You can't seriously believe them! First of all, we're third generation goddesses, meaning we're never going to be as strong as the first generation. Secondly, you shouldn't have to pick one category. If I was you, I'd show those demons whose boss, and then rule over both categories!" I explained. Kai chuckled and shook her head. "If only, but mom says I should be a civil ruler. Not a fiery ball of doom like grandpa Hades." She said. "You don't have to be like him. Be like your grandma, Persephone! She was one of the nicest rulers around, from what I've heard. And even without Hades as her husband or Zeus as her father, no one dared to mess with her. You can be respected and kind at the same time, Kai. You just need a balance." I shrugged. She smiled at me. "Would you help me?" She asked. "Sure. Anything to get me out of work." I huffed.

Kai brought me to the tree house of the demon kids that had been bullying her. "Really? These are the kids bullying you?" I asked. "Yeah." Kai nodded. "They're sitting in a dying tree. One little push and they're all dead." I shrugged. Kai's eyebrows shot up in shock. Before she could say something, one of the kids saw us. "Hey hollow-horns! Get off my property!" He shouted. "Your tree is dying! You're gonna fall!" Kai warned them. "Oh yeah? So be it! We can handle it! You know why? Because we're real demons!" He announced, and his friends laughed. "Tip it over." I said. "What?" Kai looked at me, confused. "Tip. It. Over." I ordered. "I can't do that!" She exclaimed. I rolled my eyes and threw a fireball at the tree. As a plus, I made the ladder fall down so that the boys were stuck up there. "Are you insane?!" Kai shrieked. "Whatcha gonna do about it?" I smirked. Kai sighed and held out her hand. The house slowly lifted out of the tree, and she dropped it a few inches from the ground. The guys inside all fell, and ran out angrily, only to be immediately silenced by the flaming tree tipping over in the yard. A loud thud echoed around us and the boys bolted to us. "You bitches! You destroyed our tree house!" He snapped. Just then, the roof on their house actually collapsed inward, making Kai and I smirk. "You're welcome." I replied. "You better count your days, hot head, and you too fake Fate!" He snapped, his tail whipping behind him. Kai's hair caught fire and I glared at the boy. Then suddenly, Kai snatched the kids horn and threw him onto the ground. "Harass me all you want, but you will not disrespect another god in my presence. You are but a mere mortal, and we will forever outlive you. So unless you want to make your short time in this realm that much shorter, I'd suggest learning your manners!" She snapped. I smiled at her and the kid just glared up at her. I thought she had surely changed his mind, but he actually had the audacity to spit on her shoe. "Ew!" Kai took a step back. I clenched my fists. "Are you out of your mortal mind?! That's your princess!" I snapped. "Ooh- I'm scared." He shrugged. "You should be." We heard. Kai and I went stiff, and the boy just raised an eyebrow. Then, in a swirl of fire, Quinn appeared, and suddenly the boy was shaking. "Your majesty!" He struggled to kneel before her, and all his friends ran away. Quinn wasn't having it though. She kicked him in the chin, and he flung backwards into the grass. "Your principal called, and you should be at work." Quinn turned to us. "Sorry queenie, but hey! I was helping your daughter!" I smiled. "I noticed. Next time, Kai, just tell me that something's going on. I'm not above hurting children. And you! You're going to school with her now." She pointed at me. "What?! Why?" I asked. "Two reasons. She needs a bodyguard, and she needs a friend. Oh! And also, I'm in charge of you!" Quinn shouted. I shrunk under her voice. "Yes ma'am." I nodded. "Good. Now run along. I'll... handle the kid." She turned back to the boy. "Don't kill him, mom." Kai said. "Ha! That's funny. Go on, Kai. I'll see you at home." Quinn walked away.

"Thanks for helping me today, Cal." Kai smiled. "Thanks for getting me out of the house. Hey! Do you think you could come hang out while I'm spinning?" I asked. "Sure! It's the least I could do for you." She agreed.

End of Flashback
"You know, if you really want to keep your mind off of Lemmy and her super-human, you could always indulge yourself with your cousin. Retro is dying for any word from you." Kai said. I hummed and looked down in thought. "I'll have to see how it affects the future, but that's not a bad idea. Honestly, I've just been avoiding Retro because it's fun to watch her squirm, but she has become very annoying lately. So we'll see." I shrugged. Kai chuckled. "Oh, I do love your twisted mind." She smiled.
