Amber's POV
The Lascano's took me to dinner with them, and when we got back, I settled into my new room in the basement. After I locked the door, I immediately video called Ember. "Hey baby! You feeling cozy yet?" She asked. "Hey, Shock Wave. Nice job being a show off! You're gonna get us caught! You're lucky they believed me!" I spat. "Oh calm down, sweetheart. It's not like I knew your new family would be superheroes! I was just trying to get us in with the locals! What'd you tell them?" She asked. "That I was dating a superhero." I answered. "Well you are. It's not a lie. Did you tell them about you?" She asked. "No! I've been here for five hours! I don't even remember where the bathroom is!" I groaned. Ember giggled. "Do you like them? Are they nice?" She asked. "They're superheroes. Of course they are, and yeah! I actually do like it here." I admitted. "I will admit, I'm not hating the hot weather. Oh! Send me your school info so I can enroll." She remembered. "Let's hope you're within the district this time. How's the Florida house?" I asked. "You have to see this. Look!" Ember ran to the back porch and pointed her camera out to the pool. "This is just one of them. There are four, and one of them is upstairs! I love it!" She laughed. "I will never understand how you can be so surprised by your own richness." I chuckled. "What can I say? I'm easily impressed." She shrugged. I smiled and shook my head. "I'll call you later, but try to lay low, please." I begged. "You got it. I love you!" She smiled. "I love you too." I replied.
"You guys are so cute." I heard. I turned around to be faced with a tall boy with short blond hair. "Christian, what now?" I asked. "Relax, Amber. I have another message for you and Ember, my dear pupils." He smiled. "You know sometimes I wish other people could see you so that I don't feel like I'm talking to a wall." I admitted. He smiled. "Make a good impression on this family. They will be perfect for you, and your power, but be cautious. Time is not something to be messed with, as you know." He warned me. "Yeah I know! You've told me only a million times!" I rolled my eyes. "Because it's important! I heard those words a billion times when I was alive, and I didn't listen! Now look at me! I'm a spirit trapped in a couple sticks that has to teach you how to wield time!" He groaned. I huffed. "What's so different about being cautious here, than any other place?" I asked. "These people are associated with the Fates. They know even better than you, the price of time magic. You and Ember must make yourselves known quickly, and explain everything to your hero family. If not, then someone is going to get extremely angry when they see me." He explained. "See you? They can see you?" I asked. "The gods can. I must return to the Chrajx now, but remember, you'll know when it's time." Christian disappeared and I just stared at the wall for a moment. I can't do what he wants me to do. If I tell them the truth now, they'll just get freaked out.
At school, Kara brought me over to sit with her and Lizz. "You don't mind if a freshman sits with you?" I asked. "Nah. Lizz's cousin is a freshman too, and she sits with us. It's not a big deal." She shrugged and we sat down. "Amber, this is Ritz." She introduced me to Lizz's cousin. The girl was slouched over on her elbows, picking at her food on the table. She had bright red hair and wore all black. Kara sat down beside Lizz and I slowly sat beside Ritz. She glanced over at me confused, and then realized who I was. She moved her hair aside and took out her ear buds. "Hi! You must be Amber." She smiled. I smiled back and nodded. "Ritz, did you hear Kat is going to graduate early?" Lizz asked. "Not a shocker." Ritz shrugged. "She wouldn't be the first. Emma graduated really early due to her Teen Island credit." Kara replied. "What's that?" I asked. They looked over at me in confusion. "You've never heard of Teen Island? Like... at all?" Lizz asked. I just blinked at her. "Not a lot of people do, babe. Stop being an ass." Kara huffed. "Well if she hasn't heard of it, then she can't be a suspect. I was just shocked." Lizz shrugged. "That you were wrong?" Kara smirked, and Lizz rolled her eyes. "Where are you from, Amber?" Ritz asked. I looked over at her. "Uh- I was born in Tennessee, but I've moved all over." I shrugged. "What's it like dating a superhero? Do you know her identity? Or do you just fuck with the mask on?" She asked. My eyebrows shot up and my jaw dropped. "Ritz, you can't ask that here... or anywhere. Don't say that to anyone anywhere." Lizz said. "Sorry, Amber. You don't have to answer that." Kara laughed. "I'm a virgin! Aren't you the same age as me?!" I shrieked. "Tublos age faster mentally than humans. I had sex at ten." Ritz smirked, and I gagged. "So are we gonna get to meet your girlfriend? Like... actually meet her?" Lizz asked. "She's been here for a day! Leave it be!" Kara groaned. "I'll ask." I shrugged.
Ritz was in a few of my classes, and since we were both new, she stayed by me. We walked together during gym. "Do you ever miss living on the moon?" I asked. "I miss my parents and my old friends, but not really anything else. Being here is safer for me anyways." She shrugged. "Why's that?" I asked. "Tublo's have to get married at sixteen, or else they're executed. My mom is the one that checks to see if people are married, and she's been lying for a lot of them. She's trying to get the rule changed, but no luck so far. As long as I'm here, and since I'm her daughter, I get an extension to the deadline. I have to be married by eighteen, but that doesn't make it any easier." Ritz explained. "I'm so sorry. That's awful." I replied. She just shrugged. "The Tublo population dwindles by several hundreds each year just because of that rule. We're all used to it, and kids like me are ready to die at any second." She explained. "That's not right! You shouldn't be ready for that." I crossed my arms. "Calm down, girl. I've been searching, and I have my eyes on a few boys. Specifically that one." She gestured with her head and I looked over. There was a large group of guys playing basketball together. "You're gonna have to be more specific." I said. "The little one." She replied. I looked back over and my eyes landed on the short boy with brown hair. "Can he even shoot the ball?" I asked. "That's what I thought, but keep watching." Ritz laughed. We watched the boys play for a few minutes, and when the boy finally got the ball, he bounded off the ground higher than I've ever seen any kid jump, and slammed the ball down into the hoop. "Damn. Score one for the white boy." I laughed, and Ritz nodded in agreement. "He's one of The Arrows brothers, but he's not on the team. I only ever see him in this class, but he makes a lasting impression." She sighed. "I havent met them yet." I shrugged. "They're nice, but they're a little crazy so just don't get overwhelmed." She replied and I groaned. "Easier said than done." I huffed.
After school, Santana came home late. She burst through the front door and stopped when she found me in the living room. "I'm so sorry! I couldn't stop her." She panted. "Huh?" I asked. Just then, a black cloudy figure zoomed in the door behind her, and transformed into a human girl. My eyebrows shot up in shock. "This is her?" The girl pointed at me. "Yes! Zephyr, this is Amber. Amber, Zephyr. My boss." Santana explained. I looked over at Zephyr. "Ok. Listen up red head. I run the matrix. A company that specializes in protecting and assisting superheroes, and there is not a single hero in this city that goes unchecked by me. So I'm gonna need you to call your little girlfriend up to my office, so I can put her in the system. This is for her own safety, as well as yours, and it's not something I take lightly." Zephyr snarled. Christian suddenly appeared behind her and my eyes widened. "Listen to this one. She's bitchy, but she's good. I approve." He gave me a thumbs up. I just stared at him blankly, since I can't express any reaction to him. "Oh god. She's doing the thing again. Hey! Are you ok?" Santana waved her hand in front of my face. "Ah! Uh- yeah. Sorry. Um..." I glanced back at Christian, and he disappeared again. "I don't know that she'll actually do it, but I can definitely call her." I nodded. "If she doesn't comply, I will track her down. I have eyes everywhere, and if I wasn't a hero myself, everyone's secret identities would be trashed. Just let her know that." Zephyr spat, and I nodded quickly. "Good. Bye!" She changed back to her cloudy form and flew away. I looked over at Santana. "She's always like that. Don't take it personally. Sorry for the ambush." She shrugged and walked away.
