Kara's POV
There was a knock at my door, and I surely wasn't expecting Santana to be on the other side. "The hell do you want?" I asked. "A ride?" She smiled nervously. I blinked at her. "No." I huffed. I tried to shut the door but she shoved her foot in it. "Wait! Please! I'm gonna be late for work." She begged. I opened the door back up. "You got a job?" I asked. "Yes, and my boss is not a patient man." She said. "How do you know that, if it's your first day? I know you didn't have this job yesterday." I crossed my arms. She sighed. "Because it's Gabe." Santana explained. "Ha! You fell for his propaganda?! Oh that's rich! Yeah I'll drive you. He said he has a new feature for my super suit and I have to pick it up anyways." I laughed and led her to my car.
Santana gave me her key card to scan at the gate. "Welcome, Santana Lascano." A robotic voice said. Then the big navy blue gate opened, and I drove into the employee parking lot. "Wow! You get shaded parking. Lucky you." I chuckled. "Kara, I'm freaking out." Santana mumbled. I parked and looked over at her. "Why? You know Gabe isn't gonna be hard on you." I said. "I'm not working with Gabe. I'm working in the other division." She explained. My eyebrows shot up. "You're working for the superhero protection program?" I asked. She nodded. "Why?" I asked. "Because I'm not good enough to go out there and be a hero with you like everyone wants me to be! But I can't stand seeing my best friend get hurt, knowing I have the power to prevent it. I figure this way, at least I'll be somewhat involved, right?" She asked. I raised an eyebrow. "Santana, you don't have to prove yourself to anyone." I told her. "That's not what I asked." She got out of the car.
I followed her into the elevator. "Santana, wait!" I yelled. "Welcome to Matrix Industries. Please select a floor level." The voice came back. Santana pressed the basement button. "Please scan a key card to allow access to the basement." The voice said. She scanned it and the door closed. "Welcome, Santana Lascano." It repeated. A light shined over me for a moment. "And Red Rover." It welcomed me and I smiled. "Still a stupid name." Santana huffed. I rolled my eyes. "The first five missions I had were all something with cars. The media took initiative with my name. I didn't get to pick!" I exclaimed. "Mhm. Whatever you say." She rolled her eyes. I frowned and sighed as the door opened again.
We were immediately greeted with Gabe's daughter. "You're late." She snapped. "Sorry Zephyr. She drives slow." Santana pointed at me and I flicked her off. "Yeah ok. Follow me, and be quick with it." Zephyr speed-walked away and we ran after her. "Kara, your suit tracker has been updated and it's ready to be picked up. Zane will check you out right over here." Zephyr pointed to the left. "Are you in a rush or something? Why so demanding, Zeff?" I asked. She stopped and spun around. "I told you not to call me that! And I'm very stressed right now, ok? With Hurricane injured, we need twice the patrol around the city. Which means I'm gonna get stuck being a hero while she's down!" Zephyr explained. Santana frowned and looked away. "Blaire will be back up in no time, and you don't have to do that. Just double it on me and Lizz. We can handle it." I offered. Zephyr raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure?" She asked. "Positive." I nodded. She sighed. "Thank you. Come in, Zane. Come in?" She grabbed her radio. "Yeah?" Zane called back. "Schedule in Red Rover and Sonar to cover Hurricanes calls." She told him. "Will do, over." Zane cut out. "Santana, let me get you a uniform." Zephyr walked away with her.
I walked over to Zane. "Hey! You got my suit?" I asked. "Hey Kara! Or uh- Red Rover. Yes, I do. Here you are. Just sign here, please." He handed me my suit and a clipboard. "You don't have to call me that just because your sister does." I laughed, and signed the sheet. "It's actually dad's rule. He says that we are to address you as heroes at work, but we can address you normally outside." He shrugged. "Did you see that Santana is working here now?" I asked. "I did. She told Zephyr all about it, but I have to say, if protecting her friends is why she's here, she should just leave." He said. "Why's that?" I asked. "We're called the protection program, but we only protect your secret identities. We handle the media's look on you, your suit designs and gadgets, and keeping your home life private, but it's not like we have any real way to keep you safe on the field. I mean, look at Blaire." He laughed. I sighed heavily. "Just humor her, ok? Something is wrong with her right now, and until we can help her, we need to go with whatever she says. Just do me a favor and don't let her into your pants." I said. Zane laughed. "I grew up with you girls. I'm not attracted to either of you, and besides, I'm talking to someone at the moment." He smiled. "Ooh! Tell me later. I gotta go beg Lizz to do the patrol with me." I said. "You volunteered her for that without her consent?! Ha! Good luck." Zane chuckled.
"Mom?" Her door was open so I just walked in. Apollo peeked out of the closet. "Kara! Hi! What's up?" She smiled. "Santana is working for Gabe now." I said. Her eyebrows shot up. "She is? Well that's great! I was hoping Gabe would give you two a reference on your resumes, but that's good too!" Apollo smiled. "No you don't get it. Today, Santana told me that she thought she wasn't good enough." I explained. Mom was taken back. "Good enough for what?" She asked. "For you! For mom! Good enough to be a hero! To be in our family." I explained. She blinked a few times. "That's nonsense." She shook her head. "Yeah, I know that. But she won't listen to me, and she's dead set on working for Gabe just to make you proud of her." I said. "What?! I am proud of her!" Apollo exclaimed. "But she doesn't know that." I replied. Mom sighed and ran her hand over her face. "I have to go to work, but I will talk to her." She said. "She might need more than a talk." I replied. Before mom could respond, someone called my name. "KARA. You signed me up for patrols?!" Lizz snapped. Mom raised an eyebrow at me. "Don't say anything." I huffed, and walked out.
Lizz almost tore my cape off during patrol. "I hate you so much right now." She spat. "Hey, don't yell at your future wife." I smirked. "I want a divorce." Lizz growled. I laughed and we landed on a rooftop. "Have you found anyone that piques your interest yet?" I asked. "No. School hasn't even started yet. Where am I finding all of these mystery hoe's?" Lizz asked. "Oh! That reminds me! Will you please come back-to-school shopping with me and Santana? I cannot stand going alone with her." I begged. "Sure. I need a new backpack." Lizz agreed. "Thanks." I smiled. "No problem. Now are we done?" She asked. "We still have another hour." I laughed. Lizz groaned and took off into the air. I followed after her.
