Grounded. Who would have thought Cody would have been grounded for the first time in his life? Not him, that was for sure. But he did lie to Loona after all, and he knew that it was probably coming that she would find out eventually. The boy just laid in his bed as he was grounded for the rest of the day. Perhaps he thought that taking a nap would have been a good way to let the day pass by so he would be ungrounded tomorrow. After all, it can be boring being grounded. Of course, he did feel lucky to come back alive without a bloodthirsty mugger or maniacal serial killer after his fragile skin, and he got out of bed to look at the window.
He was thinking of all the other demon kids that were not grounded and enjoying their freedom down there. The faint sounds of car horns in the valley below the apartement complex were still a common thing to hear.
But Cody also felt lucky to have just been grounded for a whole day and that's it. Come tomorrow, he will be a free boy again. He felt lucky that he wasn't grounded for a week or a month or too, that would have been far more boring. Looking over to his own stuffed animal sitting next to him, Cody said: "Well, at least i have you, Patrick." Yes, Cody didn't really feel alone while being grounded and this stuffed pig looked like a good cellmate for him. "Can't believe i'm grounded." The kid said to himself. "I'm not like Bruce, who probably gets grounded all the time."
As he looked up in the ceiling, he hoped that he would get tired and just nap already just to get by the rest of the day. But, being a kid, he wasn't so tired unless it was nighttime, and his small boy metabolism would force him to sleep when it's nighttime.
"Do not be too hard on yourself my son" said a familiar voice. Jesus appeared out of nowhere near the bedroom door. "Everyone makes mistakes every now and then."
"I feel like I betrayed Loona's trust like that."
"It's nothing like that." Jesus reassured him. "If that was even true, she would have given you a longer sentence than this,"
"Yeah, that sounds like it makes sense." Cody laid on the bed and rested his hands behind the back of his head.
"I can assure you that this is not out of pure hatred, Loona loves you and she only wants you safe"
"I know. But what about Misty? Should I trust her?"
"Like I mentioned about Verosika Mayday, it is up to you. But she does not look like a threat. Besides, you still have that crucifix of yours just in case anything awful goes wrong. After all: no demon can withstand my holy power. There is no other power greater than mine or my father."
"Right. I just want this day to end so I won't be grounded anymore."
"Come on, it is only for one day. You are a strong boy, Cody. You will survive this. Like I have mentioned to you, you have made a mistake, which everyone makes. And there is an old saying."
"What's that?" Asked Cody
"It's always the quiet ones." Jesus smiled. "No one is perfect."
"Look, I just need to think things over." Cody said.
"Perfectly understandable, young one." The. He disappeared into holy light again. Cody was alone (with Patrick the pig) again.
He just laid in his bed and put in his pajamas if he was going to take a nap or go to bed earlier than usual. When he was about to take a nap, Loona suddenly came in the door and walked up to the kid.
"Cody, you alright?" She asked, sitting on the bed next to him.
"I'm fine." Cody replied. "Just thinking what I just did today. Grr, I'm such an idiot."
"No you're not." Said Loona. "You're not an idiot. You made a mistake, that's all. And I just wanted to make sure you were ok."
"Like I said, I'm fine."
Loona was silent and said: "listen, I want you to know that I am only doing this because I love you."
"Ok."
Silent again, Loona finally said: "look, since you are apart of my family now, I might as well tell you a little bit about my backstory."
Those words immediately made Cody sat up and look at her.
"So, you might want to hang on."
Cody was just waiting to hear what his new adopted sister had to say about her past.
"Ok, I almost grew up in an orphanage, but it felt more like a pound or a crappy animal shelter. It looked... more like a jail."
"What?" The kid sounded surprised.
"Yep. But we had privileges that are not like in jail. But the point is, I waited my whole childhood to get adopted because, according to Hell law; when a hellhound turns eighteen years of age, and if he or she is not adopted before then, then they... are put to sleep."
"Sleep? What's so bad about sleep?"
Loona has to whisper the truth of what that meant to the kids' right ear, making him gasp in shock. "Oh my god." He softly said.
"I did have some kennel mates but I had to watch many of them get adopted as I got new roommates over the course of time.
Poor Cody just felt like tearing up hearing this sad backstory.
"I felt like no one wanted me at all, but before I turned eighteen, that's when Blitzo came along."
"Oh."
"Yeah, it was pretty bad."
"But aren't you glad you got adopted?"
"Well I always wanted to be adopted by someone cool and tough. Someone that would speak to me. I didn't need Blitzo. I don't know what possessed him to adopt me, but he did anyway."
"Come on, Loona, Blitzo is a cool guy and he loves you."
"I'm... I'm just glad to be out of that shitty place." Then she looked away. "I don't really know who my parents are. All I know is that; they left me in that hellhole when I was a baby." She felt like crying but didn't want to show that side. "They probably don't even know who I am anymore. And... it's not fair."
More tears were building up. "What kind of parents just leave their kid like that without saying goodbye to them?"
Poor Cody himself felt like crying hearing this sad backstory. He had no idea Loona had to endure such a sad childhood like this. He wondered if Tex knew about this or if he had something similar.
At last, more tears escape her eyes as she couldn't hold them back any longer. Cody hugged her to help make her feel better and he was crying too, for he hated seeing his own friend like this. "And... I'm glad to have you in my life." Loona sniveled as she hugged Cody back.
"I'm sorry you had to go all through that, Loona." Cody said
"No, it's not your fault. Please don't cry."
"At least... at least you got a home."
"Yeah."
They hugged each other for a long period of time and never let go. This was all too wholesome and Loona hated her past some much.
Without admitting it, Loona was glad she was adopted by Blitzo after all. At least she can always rely on Cody as family, for she always wanted someone to take under her wing... or under her tail in her case.
