Chapter 18
Ahana
This is not a house; this is a home. I know the difference between them. I have firsthand experience of the difference itself.
Their bickering is what I have missed all my life being a single child. To have someone when needed, to be there for someone when they need you. I always used to ask my mother why I couldn't have a sibling like others, but she always used to dodge my questions.
"Pani, beta," Dadi's voice dragged me out of my trance.
"Ahh, thank you, umm... umm..."
"What is it, beta? Do you want to say something?" Putting her hand on my head, she asked lovingly.
"Can I call you Dadi?" I kept my head down.
"Look at me, Ahana." Her command made me look at her shyly.
"Ji."
"Of course, you can call me Dadi, beta. What else would you call me?"
"Ji, Dadi."
"Aryan said you are from Delhi."
"Ji, Dadi."
Suddenly I realized the gift I bought for Dadi was still in the car.
"Umm... Dadi, can you call Ahaan? I forgot something in the car."
"Ahaan!" she called him.
"Yes, Dadi?" He appeared instantly. Was he here only? I thought he left.
"Ahana forgot something in your car. Go bring it."
"Ji, Dadi." This obedient side of him is cute.
'Wait, did I say cute? Damn, there must be a short circuit in my brain.'
"Here it is." He handed me the gift.
"Dadi, this is a small present from my side. I hope you like it."
"This was not needed, but since you brought it already, I can't refuse to take it, can I?" She laughed, which made me feel a little better.
"I heard a gift is here." An Aryan voice came from somewhere.
"Yes, but that's not for you," Ahaan teased him.
"Ohh, I am offended, Ahana. You didn't bring a gift for me. I thought we were friends." He made a baby face, which made me chuckle.
"I'm really sorry. I didn't have the time to prepare a gift for you, but you can give me your address and I'll send you one."
"Seriously, you are so sweet." Aryan's baby voice made me chuckle again.
"Oh my god! This is so beautiful." Dadi traced her hand all over the saree very smoothly, like it was made of glass instead of fabric. "Where did you get it from?" she questioned.
"Dadi, I designed it myself. The fabric is cotton, so it won't be sticky and it's safe to wear."
"You designed this? It's beautiful."
"Thank you, Dadi. I'm glad you liked it."
"Time for lunch," a house help came to inform.
"Let's go, rats are doing a marathon in my stomach."
"When are they not?" Ahaan's sarcastic comment made Dadi glare at him.
I was walking with them towards the dining area, all the chat, and the feeling of being loved made me overwhelmed, and tears gathered in my eyes. I wiped them quietly and moved forward after her. Nobody was there to eat with me, I was all alone. Eating alone was the toughest thing to do.
I hope you are happy wherever you are. I will meet you someday to tell you that I made it.
Who is Ahana missing, who is the person she is talking about?
