Chapter 78
Ahaan
Red. That's all I saw. Red pulsed behind my eyelids, fueled by a rage so potent it threatened to consume me. This wasn't just anger anymore; it was a primal roar demanding justice.
He was the reason my childhood was fractured, the one who stole my parents and left a gaping hole in my life. And now, he had the audacity to try and take Ahana from me too. The bastard had the audacity to send some forged pictures to Ahana. He really believed that the mere picture would break our relationship.
My hands fisted the urge to strangle the life out of him an unwelcome but persistent thought. But I knew I had to control myself. Ahana wouldn't want this. I looked at my wife who was standing in the corner of the room, shaking her head. Taking a deep, shuddering breath, I forced myself to speak, my voice a low growl.
"You took everything from me, Rana," I spat, each word dripping with contempt. "My parents, a normal childhood – and now you tried to take Ahana." The image of her tear and blood-stained face flashed in my mind, further fueling my anger.
"You had no right to interfere in our lives," I continued, my voice gaining a dangerous edge. "You sent those photos, didn't you? Tried to poison her mind with lies?"
Rana, who had initially met my glare with a flicker of defiance, now seemed to shrink under my intensity. His bravado had evaporated, replaced by a sheen of sweat on his forehead. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. Good. Let him squirm.
Taking another deep breath, I forced myself to back away. The need for vengeance was still strong, but for now, I would focus on getting justice as I promised my wife.
Stepping back, I walked towards my wife, as I reached her, she leaned into my side, her hand clutching mine with a reassuring squeeze. Her silent support calmed the storm threatening to erupt within me.
With a heavy sigh, I turned to Uncle Verma, "I think we have got all the answers we need. Do what you feel is right. I want him rotting in jail. Or else I will kill him myself."
Taking Ahana's hand I led her towards the exit. When we were about to exit the door Rana spoke, "I really started liking your mother but we started with the lies and I didn't know she would believe me I would have told her the truth. I had to leave beta. I had no other choice." Rana's voice is pleading. The way he is pleading or should I say fake pleading out of fear says a lot about him. Rana is a coward bastard, hiding behind a shield of fear.
Ahana didn't turn till he finished what he was saying. She just stand there even after his damn fake speech of like and love. She looked at me smiled and turned back. She just stared at him without any emotion. The bastard sat there in anticipation that she might forgive him for whatever he did or at least save him from going to jail.
"I might have believed you, have you not spoken about my mother so disrespectfully just now. I don't care what you think of me but then you questioned her character and proved that you are a damn self-centered bastard." Her words dripping with venom.
Rana was dumbstruck by her response he was expecting some short of sympathy for himself from the person he just not left years ago but also had the audacity to try to kill her and demean her. He looked defeated and that look satisfied my soul.
Did I say I am so fucking proud of my wife. God this amazing woman never fails to amaze me. This woman who can't even think of hurting people with words was suggesting me to beat the shit out of Rana just a few moments back and now she cussing him. God! If was not already in love with this woman I would have fallen for her today. The way she handled everything today she was screaming power.
Without glancing back she pulled me outside the room and we exited the house hand-in-hand. Reyaan stayed with uncle to handle all the work related to Rana.
After three month
Weeks went by in a spur. Today was the climax of a long and challenging journey – Rana's final hearing. Thanks to Uncle Verma and Reyaan's relentless pursuit of justice, Rana's trial had been accelerated. However, the past few weeks had been far from easy.
The first hearing had been a rollercoaster of emotions—Rana, with an audacity that, refused to acknowledge his part in faking the accident years ago. He spun a story about how he got into an accident when he was going to Ahana's mother and then lost his memory after the accident and only got the memory back when he saw Ahana for the first after years. He was not aware of the fact that he had a daughter.
Because of that, it took more than two hearings for him to be here today as the other two attempted murders were harder for him to deny because of the proofs. His first faked accident lacked proof and because of the DNA test he also couldn't deny that Ahana was his daughter but he definitely tried to play the victim.
I couldn't fathom his logic. Was he trying to lessen his punishment? Or perhaps garner some misplaced sympathy?
When The lawyer questioned him, "Mr. Rana," he challenged, his voice firm "If you didn't remember any of your past then how come you arranged a road accident for Mr. and Mrs. Malhotra because they were going to reveal your truth."
The question hung heavy in the air. Rana, for the first time, appeared flustered. His meticulously crafted story was unraveling, and he hadn't anticipated this particular thread being pulled. He stammered, his voice bordering on panicked, "I... I don't remember saying that! I...I said it was a business deal gone wrong!"
A collective gasp rippled through the courtroom. Even his lawyer buried his face in his hands in exasperation. Reyaan, Uncle Verma, Dadi, Aryaan, and Ahana – all of us exchanged a glance, barely suppressing a surge of triumph.
Rana, in a desperate bid to salvage his lies, lashed out. "I object! This is a setup!" His outburst served only to further solidify his guilt. The judge, a stern woman with an air of unwavering authority, silenced him with a sharp rap of her gavel.
With each subsequent question, Rana's fabricated story crumbled faster than a sandcastle in a storm. He was being charged with two counts of murder, attempted murder, and fraud, and the list grew longer with each passing minute. Finally, the verdict came which we all were waiting for patiently – a non-bailable life imprisonment.
As the officers led a visibly defeated Rana away, a wave of conflicting emotions washed over me. The fiery rage that had simmered within me for weeks had dwindled, replaced by a profound emptiness. Justice had been served, but it wasn't the sweet victory I'd envisioned.
Reaching for Ahana's hand, I found it cool and trembling in mine. Her eyes, though filled with a newfound sense of closure, mirrored my own sense of hollowness. We still had to grapple with the emotional fallout, to navigate the scars of a past that had violently ripped itself back open. But as I looked into her eyes, a fierce determination ignited within me. Together, we would heal, we would rebuild, and we would emerge stronger than ever.
