Chapter 32
Ahana
We went inside the house to let them know we needed some time to think about everything before concluding.
"It's okay beta Take your time" Dadi patted my head when I touched her feet
"Let's go it's getting late; I am taking the car out" Ahaan walked to the parking leaving me with Dadi
"Bye Dadi take care; bye Aryan take care of her" I waved at them and moved towards the car.
The whole car ride was silent.
I guess we were taking our own time to digest the news first, because as we have told Dadi we need some time but we are convinced that we will have to get married for the happiness of our parents and grandmother.
I guess we need some time to understand each other well before the marriage so that this doesn't turn out to be a disaster.
The whole car ride was filled with silence, and I was trying to make sense of everything that happened today.
"Let me know when you are ready to talk," he said before leaving.
After Ahaan dropped me at my place, I changed into a comfortable PJ and lay down on the bed and then the whole day played before my eyes. It was one emotionally hectic day.
I never thought I would be getting married. I mean after knowing that my father, whose name I don't even know, cheated on my mother and left her when she was pregnant.
I developed trust issues over the years, sometimes my Nani used to take me to her home and there I heard bad words about my mother and stopped going there. It was hard to understand as a child why never visited her own home, why nobody came to visit her when she was sick, and why only Nani came, but that too was almost negligible.
There were times when I heard my neighbors saying ill words about me regarding my birth, and as a child, I couldn't understand but when I grew up I decided not to mingle with anybody.
Coming to Mumbai for the project was my idea to escape reality for a while, but then I met these people and in that one meeting I felt like I do have someone whom I can call when I need them, and just that thought made me crave for my own little family.
Mumma always used to say I will find my Gudda one day.
And it took me back to the time when Mumma was telling a story and at the end of which she mumbled something like that "If everything had been right, the way she had wanted it to be, then I too would have met my Gudda by now".
Was she talking about the thing that Dadi said, I guess so, because before her death she mumbled something similar to me.
And if that was her wish I am going to fulfil it.
I don't know when I dozed off, but I woke up with my phone ringing, without looking at the caller ID I picked up the call, "Hello"
"Hello" Nani's voice came through the phone
"Namaste Nani, kaise ho aap" I sat on the bed comfortably
"Namaste Nani, how are you?"
"Thik hu bache, tum kaisi ho" the extra sweetness in her voice is alarming
"I am a good child, how are you?"
"Mai bhi thik hu" All the sleep went out of the window after her sweet voice
"I am also good"
"When are you coming to Delhi, isn't your project over yet"
"The project is over but I have joined the company as a permanent employee now"
"Ohh that's good..." she paused and I could hear someone else also talking in the background "Actually I called you to invite you to the puja we will be having next week, you are coming right" It's funny she didn't ask me she just informed me now
"I will try," I said drily
"You have to come bacha this is important for all of us, Afterall we are your only family" Again that extra sweetness
"Ok, I am getting late for work, bye take care" I cut the call without listening to whatever she was saying
On the way to the office, I kept thinking about what Nani was saying about me being a part of the family, It felt odd, she never invited Mumma for any of the puja or functions all these years initially she took me to her house a few times but that never went well and then there was one time I was invited I guess after my 18th birthday and that was odd it felt all weird, but since nothing happen as such I felt I was overthinking but now I am not overthinking there has to be something because even then she never called me a part of the family.
"Ma'am we've reached" That broke my trance
"Here, thank you" paying him I went inside the building.
The moment I entered my office Aryan knocked "Come in"
"I am sorry" he was looking at his shoes
"What are you sorry for?" I know but I wanted to play a bit
"About the other day, although it was not a lie, I was talking about you when I said Bhai is going to marry someone from this office"
"What..." Mira's almost piercing voice filled the room.
"Relax Mira" gesturing to her to close the door so that the news which even I can't wrap my head around would become a random rumor.
"Relax...are you serious... you are getting married to none other than cold-shoulder and you didn't even tell me that" she huffed and sat on the empty chair beside Aryan
"Did you just call my brother cold-shoulder" Aryan acted surprised and quirked a brow
"Ohh sorry, I didn't see you, I would not have called him the oblivious thing then" she shrugged him off.
"I also got to know last night only and we haven't decided what to do with that, it's Dadi's decision, I don't know how to deal with it" I looked at the message which popped up on the screen from Mr. Malhotra.
Can you meet me at my office for lunch so that we can discuss this?
I looked at it like the phone was going to reply to him.
"Who is it?" Mira asked
"Mr. Malhotra" I was still looking at the message.
"God, Ahana you are still calling me Mr. Malhotra, you are going to marry him" she teased
"Exactly Ahana, you should call bhai by name" Aryan supported her
"Or you can give him cute names, like baby, babu, or something," Mira said and they both laughed
"Or I think you guys should get the hell out of here before I kick your ass out myself" I glared at both of them.
"Ok, no need to get into angry bird mode" she poked Aryan's arm
"Ok Bhabhi, we are leaving" By the time I would have registered what he said, they were out of the door laughing like maniacs. I stared at the door and when I looked back at the computer screen where I could see my face all pink with a blush that spread to my neck.
