243. Career Moves

Once Mapi had vacated the hotel room and stopped distracting Kaia with her presence, the brunette was finally able to FaceTime her manager on her laptop at the now cleared breakfast table.

She had the summer breeze blowing in from her left, a fresh pot of brewed coffee just off camera and Fabian settling down for his first nap of the day with his nest bed placed on the chair at Kaia's side.

One hand was feeding him his bottle, while the other clicked call and she waited for it to connect.

There were many things they needed to discuss in detail, many things they've been planning for months now and this call was a finalising one for one of Kaia's many projects outside of football.

On a random night in January earlier this year, Kaia got a DM late at night while her and Mapi were watching a movie in bed. It was from none other than Bear Grylls, and he had asked her if she wanted to appear on the new series of Running Wild with Bear Grylls.

The idea thrilled Kaia, she loves adventure, pushing herself out of her comfort zone and doing things unorthodox and unique. It sounded like the perfect thing to push herself in other aspects of her life, to gain some survival skills.

Mapi was jealous when she heard because in recent years she'd become a big fan of Bear's various survival shows, but she encouraged Kaia to agree as it would be a once in a lifetime experience.

So Kaia's personal manager Claire had spent the last few months trying to make this possible; with the risk of injury and busy schedules slowing it down a lot. But the insurance had finally come through, and Kaia was nervous to find out she'd be jetting off to Guatemala right after preseason in America.

That was only in a few weeks.

'Holy shit' were the words Kaia chuckled in disbelief when she heard, but she was already nodding and telling Claire to go ahead and tell Bear she's more than up for it still.

Then there were the collaborations more within Kaia's comfort zone, her personal range with Nike that was due to come out in the autumn, she had to finalise her favourite recipes for her cookbook Mapi inspired her to release; and then there was Prada asking out of the blue if they could have Kaia and Mapi come onboard for a project.

It was a lot with what's already going on in their lives, but Kaia was more than up for it all and needed to know if Mapi felt the same.

Muting herself, Kaia picked up her phone and called her wife. She would FaceTime, but she knew Mapi would be surrounded by others and this was a private conversation.

"Hola, guapa." Mapi greets happily. "I've just left only two hours ago, do you miss me already?" She teases; and Kaia hears some chuckles in the background.

"Well... you'll be pleased to know that Claire has sorted out all the legal stuff; and I'm going to Guatemala on September 1st for a day in the rainforest with Bear Grylls." Kaia drops with a slightly nervous chuckle.

"What?" Mapi exclaims loudly. "You're actually going? This is so incredible! And Guatemala? Wow. That sounds very jungly, you're going to have to eat some weird insects and build like a tree fort to not get eaten in the night." She waterfalls out so fast that Kaia has a hard time keeping up over the phone. 

"Eaten in the night?" Patri asks from the background on Mapi's side, her voice laced in confusion. "Who are you talking to? It's Kaia right?"

"Sí, sí, be quiet." Mapi hushes her quietly. "Can Fabian and I come? And can they like put us up in a fancy and cushy hotel in a city nearby while you go all surviver mode in the jungle?"
