By the time Kaia and Sebastian reached the hospital in Catania, Matteo was out of surgery and in the ICU being monitored closely.
He had gone through extensive surgery to put titanium screws in his leg, a nephrectomy to remove his ruptured kidney while his brain activity was being monitored while he was still unconscious.
Elinor sat at his side the whole time, staring at his bruised and cut face, the stitches that held closed the cuts over his arms and the large bandage that covered half of his neck and the deep slash that almost took her husband away from her.
She didn't know what time it was, but she knew her children were on their way and had dropped everything to be at their father's side as well.
Both Kaia and Sebastian had to sanitise their hands and put vacuumed shoe covers on over their dirty soles before entering the private ward.
The air smelt sterile, there wasn't a single thing out of place and the casualness to the odd nurse or doctor that walked past made it feel significantly less serious.
That was until they were led into the room labelled with their father's name, where he lay unmoving in the bed in a hospital gown with an electroencephalogram net over his head, an IV drip in his arm and a breathing tube down his throat.
"Oh my god." Kaia breaths out in disbelief, stopping and feeling Sebastian's hand on her back immediately.
"Mum." Sebastian whispers, his eyes not leaving his mother and the old tears down her face.
Elinor stands and walks to them both, pulling them into a tight hug they all need. "I'm so glad you're both here."
"How is he?" Kaia asks weakly, still staring at Matteo over Elinor's shoulder.
She really wanted him to wake up, to tell her everything was fine and give her a hug. She felt like a little girl all over again, just needing her father's reassurance.
"He's... he's heavily concussed." Elinor says as she takes a step back, crossing her arms as she looks toward Matteo. "His body has been through a lot, I don't think they're optimistic about his remaining kidney functioning properly."
"It's alright." Sebastian reassures confidently, squaring his shoulder like he was preparing himself. "I'll give him one of mine."
"Sweetheart." Elinor touches Sebastian's cheek briefly. "You're not his blood type."
Kaia feels the sickening pit form in her stomach. If it was between her foot; her career and her father's life, she knew what she was going to choose. "I didn't take my medication today. I'll stop and my kidneys will filter-"
"-Kaia." Elinor interrupts. "No." She refuses.
"Mum." Kaia says in mild disbelief. "We can't leave dad like this..." she says shakily.
Elinor pulls Kaia back into a hug, seeing that she was one second away from emotionally breaking. "We're not leaving him like this." She promises. "Romeo has already offered, the doctors have already tested his blood and tissue and he's a perfect match."
"Romeo?" Sebastian realises quietly, heartbroken and proud all in one at the nineteen year old's mental strength.
He had just lost his father, but here he was offering his kidney to save his uncle's life.
"Where is he?" Kaia asks as she blinks the blurriness in her eyes away. "Is he here still?"
"No." Elinor answers. "They're all at the estate, preparing for Carmelo's funeral."
Kaia sighs and sits in one of the visitor chairs. "What happened? Mapi wouldn't tell me how it happened."
Sebastian takes a seat at his sister's side, also in the complete dark on how the car was found, how Carmelo was found and how Matteo survived.
