Kaia was a little annoyed when she got back to Barcelona and it was already October 30th, but she still dragged her wife and son to La Boqueria market to get a few pumpkins from what was left over.
Thankfully they didn't just want the conventional round orange pumpkin, they were after white ones, green and yellow, small and large to make a little autumnal scene on the steps leading up to their front door.
They left the stroller at home and put Fabian in the baby carrier he was really beginning to enjoy. He was high, right there with one of his mothers at all time and could see all the colourful things in the market they were strolling through.
There were a few good looking pumpkins, and since Kaia wanted more than they could carry between them, they managed to wrangle a shop worker into helping get them to the car.
"I'm not complaining." Mapi says looking into her boot full of pumpkins. "But what are we going to do with all of these afterwards? There're so many."She chuckles.
"Well this one," Kaia gives a tap to a discoloured orange one. "I'm going to make pumpkin soup with, then the rest we can... take to a local farm to feed the chickens maybe?" She suggests.
"Oh, wow, that's such a good idea." Mapi agrees with an impressed smile. "Can this one go on the left of the top step?" She asks pointing to the massive white one. "I think it'll look cool because it'll be the first people will see when they enter the drive."
"We'll see how it all looks when we get home," Kaia presses the button to close the boot. "But you're definitely helping me with the presentation." She grins.
The second they got Fabian down for his nap, they were outside with Mapi's car backed up to the entrance with the boot open, both of them ferrying the pumpkins out and placing them in random arrangements to see what looked best.
Mapi took the left side of the steps while Kaia took the right, calling out suggestions or asking if their placement looks good or not.
They could both feel it was one of many traditions that they were starting, something they enjoyed so much and knew would be even better with little legs running around and helping.
None of the pumpkins were carved, mainly because they didn't have time to, but the clean and full multicoloured pumpkins gave off such an elegant celebration of Halloween that was Kaia down to a T.
Looking at her side of the steps with such pride, Mapi was so in love with the married family life. She still couldn't quite believe she lived like this day to day, but she made sure to absorb it all in these special moments.
A buzz inside the front entrance of the house breaks their admiring stares and they both look at each other in confusion because it sounded like the intercom.
"Hola?"
"Was that the front gate?" Mapi asks with furrowed eyebrows, turning to jog over to the pedestrian gate out onto the main road.
Opening it, Mapi sees it's their next door neighbour from the left who had her four months old son in a stroller.
They'd met a handful of times during the construction process, mainly bonding over both having babies on the way and clearly this was the official welcome to the neighbourhood.
"I saw the lights on last night and thought I'd ring on my way past to see if you'd finally moved in." Julia says with a happy smile. "How exciting."
"Very exciting." Mapi chuckles, keeping the gate fully open so Julia can see Kaia (but also their pumpkins).
"Oh wow." Julia takes a step closer, not passing the threshold onto their drive. "That arrangement looks beautiful, did a professional do that for you?"
