The temperature was at its highest of the day despite it being 4:30 in the evening, meaning Kaia and Mapi spent the rest of their time in Sicily helping Fabian in the lemon fields.
They were supposed to be picking the odd few to bring back to Barcelona with them, but Fabian had decided to duck behind a tree and cover his eyes.
That meant they were now playing hide and seek.
And if there was one thing they all had in common, it was competitiveness.
Kaia wouldn't lose to Fabian and Mapi, meaning she absolutely legged it down a path to the opposite side of the field and hid behind shrubbery.
Annoyingly though, they had Benito the orange cat chasing them all and meowing loudly at Kaia because she was crouched down unnaturally.
Mapi pointed Fabian in the right direction and let him run, laugh, get distracted by an old lemon on the floor and truly enjoy the outdoor day.
Eventually though, Kaia's zio Carmelo made his way down the main path of the field with his sunglasses on and a smile on his face as he heard hushed squealing. "Hmm, I was sent here to find Fabian." He pretends to ponder, rubbing his chin and ignoring the little eyes watching him. "But I can't see him anywhere."
Fabian covers his mouth to hide another giggle, looking at Mapi with pure mischief in his eyes.
"Oh well..." Carmelo continues past them slowly, making sure his voice was aimed right there way. "I guess Fabian won't be getting any lasagna before he leaves."
"Lasagna." Mapi gives Fabian an encouraging squeeze. "Carmelo has lasagna for you."
"Lasagna!" Fabian shouts as he runs out of his hiding place.
"Oh my goodness!" Carmelo turns to him in an overly shocked manner, making the toddler squeal and laugh. "Where did you come from? I could've sworn I was all alone here."
"Tree!" Fabian points back to the tree him and Mapi were poorly hiding behind. "Tree!" He repeats like it's the funniest thing in the world, holding a hand to his stomach.
Carmelo chuckles at his excitement, looking at Mapi with a much more mature expression. "Where's Kaia?"
"I'm here." Kaia says as she appears on the path two or so tree down, a bright yellow lemon in her hand. "Here baby, do you want to give this to nonno when we see him?" She offers it down to Fabian.
Carmelo tuts jokingly and shakes his head. "Speak Italian to the boy." He encourages in amusement.
"English and Spanish are his main languages at the minute." Kaia explains. "They're the ones he understands properly and will need to speak in school."
Carmelo smirks, a look similar to his younger brother Matteo. "It's alright, you're having more children and I can teach them proper Italian."
"I teach him proper Italian at home." Kaia defends, falling for his rage bait instantly. "Whatever."
"Come on." Mapi chuckles fondly, placing a kiss on Kaia's cheek as she takes her hand.
Kaia offers her uncle a smile. "I'll see you for papà's birthday." She says, stepping away from Mapi to hug him tightly.
Carmelo wraps his arms around Kaia like a father might, but all of the Morellis shared this kind of love. "No, I shall meet your twins before then." He corrects. "Remember, name the boy after me." He winks.
"He already has a name." Mapi informs Carmelo with a slight grimace. "Sorry."
"Well, have another boy and name that one Carmelo." Carmelo waves Mapi's words off, kissing his niece's cheek as they separate.
