With how late it was and the lack of physical response from Matteo, the doctor wanted to let him gently rouse himself from his moderate coma.

That meant letting his eyes close again, letting gentle music play to keep his mind alert as he tried to move his fingers or his toes, any part of his body he could.

His family were then asked to go home since it was almost midnight and they all needed sleep, leaving Matteo in the peace and quiet of his dark room.

Elinor didn't leave without placing a kiss on Matteo's cheek and promising to be back first thing in the morning, but his calm heartbeat told them all that he understood and probably wanted them to go and sleep in real beds.

When Kaia got in her empty bed, she finally found excitement building in her chest, a sudden release of worry and anxiety that let her body relax back into the bed.

It let her cry freely with a smile on her face, still in disbelief that her father was awake, that he had managed to look her in the eyes only mere hours ago.

Then, Kaia was fast asleep with a sudden peacefulness about her. She hadn't managed a non-restless sleep since Saturday night, so it felt amazing to be absolutely unaware of the world.

Mapi reached the estate in the dead of night practically. It was well past Fabian's bedtime and thanks to the delay at the airport, they were only arriving now at 1am Thursday morning.

But at least it was nineteen hours before Mapi was due to arrive. She could spend the day with Kaia or at least within arms reach for when Kaia needed her.

Kaia was fast asleep on her side when Mapi entered the annex, having been let in by the groundskeeper who obviously knew who she was and didn't need to tell her where Kaia was sleeping.

Fabian was also fast asleep in Mapi's arms, so she made sure to lay him down gently on the empty side of the bed before leaning over him to place a kiss on Kaia's cheek.

Kaia's eyes shoot open, but Mapi was already kneeling on the bed over Fabian and cupping her cheek softly. "Shh, shh, it's me princesa. It's just me." She assures, pressing a kiss to Kaia's lips now they're so close.

Kaia well and truly falls apart, pulling Mapi on top of her to hug tightly. "I love you, I love you so much for being here."

Mapi has to make sure her trailing leg doesn't land on their son, but she hugs Kaia back just the same and buries her face into Kaia's neck. "Our flight was terrible. Airport security stopped me because of suspicious contraband."

"What did you bring?" Kaia asks in a mixture of disbelief and amusement.

"I uh, I left lube in the front pocket of my suitcase." Mapi admits slowly.

Kaia purses her lips to not laugh, but she had pure amusement in her eyes. "Of course you did."

Mapi bites her bottom lip at the sight of Kaia so happy, something she had been missing a lot recently. "What has you smiling like that?" She nudges her nose against Kaia's gently. "It can't all be because of me."

"My papà woke up." Kaia whispers as if she said it any louder it might not be true anymore.

"What?" Mapi breaths out, pushing off the bed and straddling Kaia so she could stare down at her properly. "Your papà is awake? Why are we here then?" She asks, feeling her eyes fill with overwhelming emotion.

"The doctor sent us home." Kaia explains, placing her hands on Mapi's bare thighs and staring up at her. "He can't... exactly move or communicate properly, but his eyes are open. They want him to rest, then they'll try to stimulate his body more tomorrow."
