By the time Kaia's parents arrived at the hospital, both babies had thankfully needed their nappies changing which was part of the medical checks to let them leave.
Fabian had woken up on the sofa confused with his hair all over the place, a constant whine coming from him when he realised they weren't home and he didn't have any of his comforts.
"Do you want me to take him to the park or something?" Mapi offers, holding Fabian who was still whining into her neck.
Kaia sighs, because if they waited a few more hours then they'd all be able to leave together. "Yeah, sure. That probably a good idea." She agrees, placing a hand on Fabian's back and feeling how sweaty he was from sleep. "Maybe take him back to the house, give him a bath, give him some love."
"Of course." Mapi accepts, knowing Kaia was fine here with the twins now her parents were also here. "Fabian, Chiquito."
Fabian lifts his face at his nickname, his cheeks red and eyes puffy from sleep and emotions.
"Shall we go home? You and me?" Mapi suggests softly. "Mami can stay here with Aurora and Nikolás, then they can join us for dinner tonight."
Fabian nods slowly, looking over towards the twins who were still in their shared cot with Matteo neatening Aurora's sleeper suit.
The entire day had been confusing for him with the waiting, the doctors and then the new babies being fussed over. So they weren't too surprised with his reserved and whiny behaviour.
Hopefully it would go back to normal once his routine was back to normal.
"It'll get easier for him." Elinor assures as she watches Kaia watch Mapi and Fabian leave the room. "You and María are doing really well making sure he still feels involved."
Kaia keeps her eyes on the door her wife and eldest left through. "He's going to have to sleep in our bed for the next few nights, I reckon. I think he's going to get really clingy."
"Just make sure he doesn't try to sell them back to the hospital like your brother did to you." Matteo laughs from where he was watching the twins lying peacefully.
Kaia turns to her father in shock. "You said he asked mamma to take me back." She recalls.
"Sì." Matteo shrugs with an amused smile. "He also asked if he could get hazelnut crêpes in return for you."
"Such a bastard." Kaia mutters to herself, unsure what she might say if Fabian turned around and asked for sweet breakfast items in exchange for the twins leaving.
For the next two hours, Kaia had to spend it in the hospital with the twins, familiarising herself with their little quirks and personalities while their discharge papers were being prepared.
Aurora loved to sleep, and she slept very deeply.
While Nikolás tended to move a little more as he slept, startling himself awake when he made a noise with his lips.
Both Matteo and Elinor had a similar reaction to Mapi when they held Nikolás for first time, noticing immediately how tiny he was under his clothes, how much he needed to fill out with milk and time.
Aurora on the other hand, Kaia could confidently hold her in her arms and only have to worry about her head being supported.
Everything Kaia and Mapi had done the day Fabian was born came back to Kaia in a rush. The way she stroked down his nose soothed Aurora just the same, while laying Nikolás across her forearm on his stomach made for burping him a lot smoother and it allowed him full support to fall back asleep like Fabian used to.
