A few days after winning her Ballon d'Or, Kaia was starting against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.

The atmosphere was toxic in the way only El Clásico could muster. Chants from fans to taunt the opposition, collective boos when Barça's best were shown warming up on the big screen.

It was a type of tension Georgia Stanaway hadn't felt before. The air was agitated before kickoff, telling her this wasn't a simple rivalry between two of the best teams in the league, this was a hatred of each other, something engraved into every fan in the stadium.

It was possibly the only thing the two sets of fans had in common; their mutual hatred of each other.

Georgia wanted to go and speak to Kaia and Lucy before the game, she wanted to wish them luck because she liked to see them play well.

But she knew she couldn't.

There were no niceties.

Alexia stood at the front of Barcelona's line with her hands behind her back and her gaze forward, fully ignoring the presence of Olga Carmona stopping at her side to lead her own team out.

No handshakes or hugs went out in the tunnels between international teammates or friends, not when they both had to perform in front of a sold out crowd.

"Vamos, chicas! Vamos, vamos." Alexia claps her hands when the referee begins to lead them out.

The crowd was deafening, the evening air thick and Clara could not believe that she was stood between Patri and Kaia in the lineup, staring up at the animated fans behind the benches.

Aitana was out with an ankle niggle, curtesy of the knocks in the previous game which made today's aggressiveness too risky for Miquel to play her.

It was playing the long game, because they were still barely into their season and couldn't afford to lose one of their most important players.

Clara kept her eyes up above the fans, staring at the VIPs in the boxes above, the neutral watchers who weren't screaming insults or cheering the home team on.

She knew Alejandro was here to watch the Spanish players, Alexia had given her the heads up.

But there were a few faces she didn't know, ones that caught her attention which she gladly allowed to distract her from hearing Real Madrid's manager shout his last minute instructions onto the pitch.

"Hey!" Kaia says over all the noise of the fans, the referee's whistle and the voices around. "Just focus on the game plan, focus on the ball at your feet, ok?" She encourages. "Alexia is right at your side, we move and play together, ok?"

"Ok." Clara nods quickly, accepting Kaia's supportive hug.

Kaia kisses Clara's head as they separate. "You'll do amazing, you're on this team for a reason." She says, needing to move away to give her hugs and high fives to other teammates before the game started.

Kaia goes to Mapi last, the two of them doing their handshake and kissing each other's taped wedding rings respectfully.

"Cause them havoc, yeah?" Mapi smirks.

"Naturally." Kaia matches the smirk, letting go of Mapi's hand so the centre back could jog back into position.

The game kicks off with a countdown from ten, then it was fast paced and energy filled football.
