The hangover was awful.
Kaia couldn't remember much past the forth shot of tequila, only flashes of Mapi's lips on hers, of Patri's slurred voice asking about party music, of someone that wasn't her wife grabbing her arse.
But now she was back in Barcelona the day before Fabian's first birthday, being thrown to the mat by Rosa who clearly didn't care that she was still mentally recovering.
They were practicing grappling today, which Kaia was actually grateful for. She didn't currently have the mental capacity to dodge a right hook or defend an attack on foot.
Whereas on the floor, she could just groan and tap out without having to suffer an injury first.
Once again, Kaia finds her back on the mat and a sweaty boxer pinning her from above, legs locked around hers and a forearm across her throat.
"Can I ask you something?" Rosa pants.
"Now?" Kaia huffs in disbelief, but she'll welcome the break.
"Yes, now." Rosa replies in a duh tone. "When did you know it was the right time to ask Mapi to marry you?" She wonders.
"Oh." Kaia realises, relaxing into the mat and feeling the pressure on her throat lessen.
"I know you spoke about it with each other." Rosa carries on. "I just mean, when did you know it was the right moment, the right time in your relationship?"
"We wanted to build a life together, to have children who could watch us play out the rest of our careers." Kaia explains simply. "I always planned to do it while we were in Australia. And us getting to the final together just made that day even more special to us."
"So... after a major tournament. Not before?" Rosa wonders unsurely.
Kaia smiles in amusement. "Why? Were you planning to ask Ale before the Euros?"
"I was..." Rosa shrugs with a smile of her own. "Thinking about it."
"Do it." Kaia urges without missing a beat, without a hint of a joke in her voice. "You've both waited long enough for each other. Do it. Let her go into the Euros the happiest she's ever been, let her know she's got you forever, let her and Alba start planning the wedding because my god... that takes forever."
"Can I um..." Rosa sits up, still straddled over Kaia. "Can I show you something?"
Forty minutes later, they're both showered and changed and walking down an exclusive street within the city, quaint shops lining the pavement with only the odd shopper passing by.
"Oo, that's beautiful." Kaia stops in front of the window, staring at the gold necklace on the display. "I bet Mapi would love that."
"For her birthday?" Rosa assumes, happy to let Kaia window shop a little before taking her inside.
"No, just because." Kaia shrugs with a smile so smitten that all Rosa can do is smile fondly, looping her hand around Kaia's forearm.
"Come on." Rosa urges them inside.
After speaking to the jeweller quickly, he returns to Rosa with a ring box in his gloved hands, opening it and placing it on the table in front of him.
Rosa was confident in her choice, she was excited to see Alexia's reaction. But she wanted Kaia's last minute opinion.
Yes, technically Mapi had known Alexia for longer and might be a more obvious choice. But Kaia had an eye for jewellery, she knew how to look for details and knew what styles and looks Alexia would desire more.
