Kaia felt like a stranger watching parents greet each other in the carpark like friends while she got Fabian out of his carseat alone, scanning the building for emergency exits and the playground for accidents waiting to happen.
Luckily, Julia had always been a compassionate person. So instead of heading inside with Tomás, she walked across the carpark and stopped by the bumper of Kaia's Porsche.
"You have mami with you today!" Julia says to Fabian excitedly.
Fabian squeals and hugs Kaia's face as she lifts him into her arms, clearly beyond thrilled to have Kaia joining him today.
"He's going to have to walk me through everything." Kaia jokes, gently lowering one of Fabian's arms so she could see. "I feel like an outsider, like they might take Fabian off me thinking I've kidnapped him." She jokes.
Julia looks between Fabian's smiley face and Kaia's stressed one. "Not with those eyes you've got." She refuses to believe. "He's your spitting image, Kaia."
Kaia takes a gentle look towards Fabian's soft features, touched people could see herself in his beautiful expression. "Maybe it's my face," she gives a small tug on Fabian's earlobe, knowing it made him giggle. "But your cheekiness is all mamá." She whispers as she kisses his cheek.
The two mothers make their way in together with their sons both babbling back and forth in that fast toddler gibberish, through the main doors where the head teacher was waiting to check in all the children and parents.
The second the teacher sees Kaia, a wide and excited smile appears on her face. "Oh my Fabian!" She exclaims. "Who's this you have with you today?"
Fabian bounces in Kaia's arms excitedly, poking Kaia's cheek. "Mami."
"Your mami." The teacher repeats in amazement. "It's so nice to see you here, Kaia." She says on a more mature and soft level. "I'm sorry for yours and your family's loss."
"Gracias." Kaia says with a weak smile. "I'm glad to finally be here. I heard nursery rhymes are part of the first term curriculum."
"Yes, singing songs together seems to bring the children together best." The teacher explains. "It's also fantastic to teach them little rhymes they can use to remember certain things."
With that little greeting over, Kaia put Fabian on the floor and let him lead her into the main room by the hand, pointing at random things that made him excited.
With it being 9am, it was practically a free for all with the children colouring, playing on mats or with beanbags to get them tired for nap time.
Fabian went straight to the cars and the big track that weaved around on a carpet, calling out into the room for something Kaia couldn't translate immediately.
"Arnu, Arnu!" Fabian shouts towards a group of toddlers his own age, holding up a blue race car.
A little blonde boy comes running over to Kaia and Fabian, plopping onto his bum next to Fabian and taking the blue race car from him.
Fabian smiles and grabs his favourite colour race car: red. "Mami, carrera. (Race.)"
Kaia crouches down, absolutely astonished that Fabian had a new friend that wasn't through mutual friends of hers and Mapi's. "Do you two like to race cars together?" She assumes, her heart melting at the little smiles the two boys send to each other.
"Sí." Arno answers quietly, putting his car in the starting block.
"Mami, car... auto." Fabian tries to explain to Arno.
