When Mapi finally got to see her family, she was already showered and changed into her travel clothes after all the post match formalities.
She had to stay at the team hotel tonight because they were all flying home tomorrow after a morning of recovery. So Alejandro wanted a debrief and conclusive meeting tonight; going for the last two weeks of ups and downs they've all had to endure.
But that didn't matter, because now it was all over family were allowed back into their hotel, the atmosphere had turned from professional into celebratory and welcoming.
The second she was able to, Mapi's body melted into Kaia's in front of the team buses. She let herself finally relax, her muscles lost their tension and her mind quietened down.
The stress of these last two weeks was something she never could've prepared for, but they were two of the most incredible weeks. She's officially an Olympian, she has a medal to bring home and place in the trophy cabinet Kaia has told her is already built in the basement.
She couldn't wait to see the house, but right now all she wanted was her wife's arms holding her tired body.
"You should get on the bus." Kaia urges with her hand gliding up and down Mapi's back, mainly to keep her awake. "We'll meet you at the hotel."
"Just a little longer." Mapi sighs. She was far too focused on how comfortable Kaia was, how her hair smelt and how supportive her arms felt. "I love you, I love you so much." She lifts her head only enough to peck Kaia's lips. "You said we could do it... and we did."
"Go, please." Kaia chuckles at the adorable deliriousness. "And don't let loads of people wear your medal."
"Why?" Mapi grins, continuing to peck Kaia's lips because she can. "Is it only for me and you?"
"That, but also do you remember that Brazilian surfer we wanted to win?" Kaia recalls and Mapi nods. "The bronze in his medal started turning green because he let his friends wear it."
"It corroded?" Mapi furrows her eyebrows in disappointment. "Ok, I'll keep it in the box then." She says seriously. No way is she letting her medal lose its shiny finish. "Then, straight in the cabinet at the house."
"Leave, before I get shouted at." Kaia hints not very subtly.
Mapi looks over to the bus that's practically full now, unwilling to detach herself from Kaia to bend down and duck her head to look under the shade of Fabian's chair. "I'll see you in ten minutes." She holds up all her fingers to her awake and relaxed son. "You can wear my medal, that's ok." She promises, stroking her thumb over the bottom of Fabian's foot before standing back up to hug her parents.
Pilar hugs her first, then Javier wraps the arm not holding Fabian's chair around Mapi's shoulder, both of them muttering their praise to her.
Mapi makes sure to get one last kiss on Kaia's lips before getting on the bus as one of the last ones to do so.
Like promised, Kaia was straight to Spain's hotel as soon as she could with the hurdle of getting Fabian's car chair securely into a taxi.
Emilia was already in the recreational room, wearing the shirt Patri wore for their last game as the two of them spoke back and forth with a few teammates over finger foods.
Mapi was harder to spot, because she was off in the corner with Jenni, sat on a leather sofa near the bar while the two of them literally leaned their bodies into each other while looking at something on Jenni's phone.
Mapi's eyes lift when she hears Alexia greet a gurgling Fabian at the bar, taking him into her arms considering he was free from restraints and very curious about all the noise around. Plus he reached for his godmother.
