I've seen how easily
I love you slips from tongues—
As if it were just another word,
As light as breath,
As hollow as a whisper on the wind.
But I always thought it meant more,
More than syllables strung together,
More than a casual confession.
To me, I love you
Was peeling back the skin,
Exposing the bones of my soul
Without ever unbottoning a shirt,
Offering a heart still beating
Without ever undressing.
And you,
You were my first—
Not my first kiss,
Not the one to claim my body,
But the first to make me feel
The weight of those words,
As if they carried the universe
In the curve of each vowel,
As if speaking them
Was giving you pieces of me
I never knew I could give.
Now, I watch others
Let I love you fall
Like coins into a wishing well,
Hoping for something in return.
But I learned quickly,
With you,
To never throw those words away.
