Maybe in another lifetime, we will work out,
When the stars align differently,
And the universe finally gets it right.
But in this lifetime, I don't even know what we are.
We're not just strangers passing by,
Nor friends sharing casual smiles,
And certainly not lovers lost in each other's arms.
Yet, we were something.
You mean something to me,
And I know I mean something to you,
In that space between breaths
Where words fail and eyes speak.
Sometimes, we say we're friends,
But you and I both know
That friends don't look at each other like that,
Don't hold onto silences so tightly
Or search each other's faces for answers
They're too afraid to ask.
Deep down, I know there's no way
We will ever truly be together,
No matter how much we want it to work,
No matter how much love hangs heavy in the air.
I know we were almost something,
A nearly written story on the brick of becoming,
And never just nothing,
But that truth still breaks my heart
Like a wave crashing against an unyielding shore,
Over and over again.
