A/N: do you guys like Shinso's parents in this fic? What are your thoughts on their relationship with their son? How do you think Midoriya views their relationship? I'm curious how other people view their dynamic based on what I've written. It's fun reading analysis and it helps me understand how other people are perceiving my work. Anyways,
Have fun reading!
Shinso POV
"Welcome home, Hito! How do you feel about finishing your first year at UA?"
My house keys dangle from my hands, one shoe half off, and I realize I have not been paying attention to my surroundings. As a consequence, I also did not give myself time to prepare to be home.
"Uh-" I resume toeing off my shoes. "Yeah, thanks. It's... good."
My mother's face tells me that wasn't convincing. The baby hairs that don't stay in her floaty bun seem to wilt, but I know I'm imagining things.
"You... alright?" She keeps her tone light, and I know she's not trying to pry.
I suck in a deep breath. "Yeah, I- uhm, I'm good. I'm good." I flash her a tense smile with a thumbs up.
She opens her mouth, then seems to stop herself, pressing her lips tightly together with a slow nod. "Well, dinner just arrived. Your dad was helping me unpack it in the kitchen, so why don't you set your stuff down and go wash up and we'll be ready in a minute." Her smile is marginally less tense than my own. I think she's just better at managing her expressions.
I nodded, feeling guilty. "Thanks."
"Okay!" She claps her hands together, turning on her heel and returning to the kitchen.
Dinner starts out okay, and the usual small talk happens. All the attention and questions are directed at me though, and to be fair, I haven't really talked to them about my transfer into the hero course or the types of classes I've been taking, or... well, anything, so I can understand why they're so eager but it's a little uncomfortable. I explain a little bit more about my transfer, although there's a lot I can't say because of the case's confidentiality, and Izuku's case is really the only reason I was transferred. I mention that I'm going to work with my teachers this summer to catch up with my classmates in one on one lessons, leaving out any mention of Izuku for ease of conversation. Of course, the me from five minutes into the future would find that trying to keep my freckled classmate's name out of the conversation was useless.
My father looks proud. "This is preferential treatment, no? Your teachers must think you have great talent, and they're the pros, so they know what they're talking about."
"They're just dedicated to their jobs," I mumble, stuffing a piece of sashimi in my mouth.
"So then, you like your teachers? They're good to you?" my mom sounds hopeful. I know she's thinking about my experience in middle school. One who said he felt uncomfortable teaching me, one who told me "kids like you should be required to wear quirk cancelling technology for others' safety," and another who banned me from speaking in her class. My parents didn't find out about that one. It was okay though, because we had two oral presentations in that class and she just graded me based on the written portion. Really, she saved me from having to go up and present, and probably getting picked on in the process.
I eat in an attempt to delay my answer, but they both seem so hopeful for a response.
"They're good," and then, "ironically the worst one so far has been All Might," I grumble around my mouthful of rice.
"He was teaching you?" My mom's eyes light up. "The last I heard he wasn't teaching the hero course students for your second semester because he was on an extended work trip back in America."
