"He may be little, but he's the fiercest heart of the pack."
"I smell blood," Seungmin said suddenly, head snapping toward the tree line.
Chan was already on his feet before Seungmin finished the sentence. The air shifted, heavy with the metallic tang of something gone wrong.
"Minho?" Chan barked.
"Already looking," Minho replied, vanishing into the shadows.
The rest of the pack moved instinctively, tension rising. Even the forest had gone quiet. No birdsong, no wind, just stillness that felt like it was holding its breath.
"Someone's coming," Jisung muttered. "From the south."
Footsteps. Unsteady. Dragging.
Chan's heart slammed once in his chest when she broke through the tree line.
"Mom?"
She stumbled into the clearing, hair matted with sweat and blood. In her arms, wrapped tight in a threadbare blanket, was a small bundle that squirmed once, then went still.
Minho was at her side in an instant, catching her as she collapsed to her knees. Chan moved slower, disbelief freezing him for a moment before he dropped in front of her.
"Mom? What—what the hell—what happened to you?"
She looked up at him with sunken eyes, skin pale and bruised.
"Christopher," she whispered. Her voice was paper-thin, but it still carried. "I didn't know where else to go."
Hyunjin knelt beside them, fingers already checking her pulse, her wounds, his expression grim.
"Please," she whispered. "Take him. Please."
Chan looked down, his eyes falling to the tiny face just peeking out from the blanket. A boy. Big brown eyes blinked up at him, dazed, half-asleep. Bruises along his temple. He couldn't be older than two.
"Who...?"
"Your brother," she rasped. "His name's Felix."
"What?" Jisung choked out. "Brother?"
"Your father—he—he found out I kept him. He didn't want another runt. Said we were better off without him."
Chan's blood ran cold.
"I ran," she said. "I ran with him, I ran until I couldn't anymore."
Hyunjin looked up. He didn't have to say anything. His eyes told them everything.
Too late.
"No," Chan whispered. "No, no, no. Hyunjin, do something."
"I'm trying," Hyunjin said, but his voice cracked. "There's too much internal damage. She's already fading."
Chan grabbed his mother's hand, squeezing it tight. "You can't die, not now. You brought him to me. You can't just leave."
"I'm sorry," she breathed. "Take care of him. Please."
The boy stirred again, small fingers clutching at the edge of the blanket. "Mama?"
Chan felt something break in his chest.
"I promise," he said, his voice thick. "I'll take care of him. He's mine now. He's ours. You don't have to worry."
She smiled. It was faint, tired, but it was real.
"Thank you," she whispered, and then she was gone.
The clearing was silent again.
"Hyunjin," Chan said after a moment, voice low. "Check him. Felix."
