"He didn't just join their family. He made them one."
"I'm just saying," Minho muttered, arms crossed as he leaned against the studio wall. "Maybe if someone didn't forget the choreo for the third time, we wouldn't be behind schedule."
"Oh, we're doing this again?" Jisung snapped, tossing his water bottle down onto the couch. "It's not like I messed up on purpose. We're all tired!"
Hyunjin let out a long sigh from the floor where he was stretching. "We're always tired. That's not an excuse."
"Okay, enough!" Chan barked from the control booth, rubbing his temple. "This isn't helping anything. We've had the same argument every day this week."
Jeongin, the youngest, sat quietly on the corner of the couch, eyes glued to his phone but not really seeing anything. Seungmin leaned next to him, expression unreadable. The tension in the room was thick—so thick it made it hard to breathe.
It hadn't always been like this.
There was a time when practice had been filled with jokes and laughter, when the boys would run out for snacks at midnight and crash together in the dorm like a real family. But something had changed. Maybe it was the stress, maybe the pressure, maybe just... too much time together.
Either way, things were falling apart.
The next morning, JYP himself called them in.
"I've been watching," he said plainly, looking around the meeting table where the seven boys sat, some with crossed arms, others staring down at their shoes. "And I'm not the only one. The fans are noticing. The energy's off. You're not connecting anymore."
Chan sighed. "We're trying, hyung. We really are. But it's like... everything we do just ends in someone yelling."
JYP studied them for a moment, then leaned forward. "I've got an idea. It might sound strange, but hear me out."
"Oh no," Changbin said under his breath. "That's never a good sign."
JYP ignored him. "My cousin and his wife were on the brink of divorce. They tried therapy, trips, even separate apartments. Nothing worked. Until they became foster parents. Taking care of someone else... it forced them to work as a team again."
Minho blinked. "Wait. You want us to... adopt a kid?"
"Not adopt," JYP corrected. "Foster. Just two weeks. Think of it as a project. Something to focus on that isn't choreography, lyrics, or your own arguments."
Hyunjin frowned. "Hyung, we're idols. We're on a tight schedule. How are we supposed to take care of a kid?"
"You've got some time this month before comeback prep starts. I already talked to the local orphanage. They're expecting you. All the paperwork's drawn up—you just need to meet the kids and sign."
Jisung raised an eyebrow. "This is... really happening?"
"I'm serious," JYP said. "I know it's a big ask. But I wouldn't bring it up if I didn't think it could help."
Seungmin looked around at the group. "We barely agree on pizza toppings. You want us to agree on raising a toddler?"
"Maybe that's the point," Jeongin said softly. It was the first time he'd spoken.
The room fell silent.
Chan looked at the others. "We go. We check it out. If it doesn't feel right, we walk away. But... maybe it's worth trying."
The orphanage was quiet when they arrived—an old, worn-down building tucked into a quieter part of the city. A woman greeted them with a warm smile.
"You must be the Stray Kids," she said, shaking Chan's hand. "I'm Director Hwang. Thank you for coming. The children are in the playroom."
