"Not all demons raise monsters."
The night was thick with the kind of heat only hellspawn could enjoy. Hyunjin walked slow at first, then faster, until he was a blur across the empty city street. His lips were stained red, not from wine—he hated the taste—but from the soul he'd devoured ten minutes ago behind a nightclub. Some banker who cheated on his dying wife and sold his company for a higher cut. The taste of betrayal was sharp, smoky. Just how he liked it.
He licked his teeth. "Ugh. Bitterness. Boring."
He adjusted his coat collar with a flick of his fingers, annoyed. The silk lining wasn't laying right. Even worse, he was still hungry.
"Someone needs to commit adultery, and fast," he muttered, stepping into an alley and stretching lazily. "Come on, humans, make a terrible decision."
That's when he heard it. A small hiccup. Followed by a sniffle.
Hyunjin froze.
"What the...?"
Another sniffle. A tiny cough.
He turned, and his eyes locked on a shape in the corner. Something small. Curled up beside a dumpster.
"Are you kidding me?" he said to no one. "Don't tell me it's a kid."
He moved closer, heels echoing against the cracked pavement, eyes gleaming red for a split second just in case something tried to jump him.
The shape turned its head. Big eyes. Shimmering golden irises. Chubby cheeks, pink from crying. A mop of curly blonde hair.
Then the tiniest voice squeaked, "You pwetty."
Hyunjin blinked.
"What?"
The toddler smiled, snot dripping from his nose. "You pwetty. Like a pwincess."
"Okay," Hyunjin said slowly. "That's... not wrong. But weirdly specific."
The kid stood, wobbling, and walked right up to him like he wasn't a walking embodiment of sin. Like he didn't ooze corrupted magic with every step. Like he wasn't wearing eyeliner sharp enough to gut a man.
"Name F'ewix," the child declared proudly, then poked Hyunjin's knee. "You my fwiend now."
Hyunjin stared down at him. "Felix?"
The toddler nodded with enthusiasm. "Uh-huh. I haf gummies."
He held out a sticky hand with one warm, half-melted gummy bear.
Hyunjin took a step back. "Oh, no. No no no. This is not my thing. I eat souls, not sugar. This is... this is someone else's job. Seungmin? Maybe Jisung. Jisung would love this weird energy."
But then Hyunjin narrowed his eyes, looking past the child's innocence. Deep down, buried under the human skin—was something else. Something old. Not fully formed. A half-spark of infernal magic.
"You're... not just a toddler, are you?" he murmured.
Felix blinked up at him. "I half."
"Half what?"
"Half deemon." Felix whispered like it was a secret, eyes wide with mischief. "Mama say I speshul."
Hyunjin's brows lifted. The energy in the alley shimmered, almost like it was humming in tune with Felix's little heartbeat.
"You're not wrong, kid," he muttered. "You're seriously weird."
Felix grinned. "I like you, pwincess."
