Chapter 1
“So, now that we’ve finished with the CIA and that rogue asset, what do say to some us time?” Zach glanced across the jet to me, but I hadn’t really heard what he was saying, I hadn’t even seen him turn to look at me. Instead I was staring in to the swirling patterns of the clouds below us.
“Cam?” Zach asked gently, moving over to sit next to me. I twisted in my seat and looked down at his sock clad feet before grazing my eyes over the rest of him, his dark jeans, red polo shirt that fit tightly to his torso, a scratch on his neck from the explosion that we had run from, a nick on his chin from when he had been shaving in a hurry this morning, and then his eyes; his dark emerald eyes.
“What were you thinking?” He asked, again gently, as he took my hand in his.
“About my dad.” I admitted hesitantly,
“Go on.” Zach pushed, always gentle with his questions, not wanting to make me uncomfortable.
“Him and Joe, they started the mission,” I looked out of the window again, “it was their mission and one of them didn’t finish it.”
“No but we did Cam.” Zach squeezed my hand, bringing my gaze back to him.
“But you know why we finished it, because he couldn’t.” I told him.
“What are you getting at Gallagher Girl?” Zach frowned, of course he knew all this, he had spent months traveling with my new stepfather and my fathers best friend.
“The fact that, we never really said goodbye to him.” I whispered, “I know where his grave is.”
“They did though Cammie, there was a funeral after he disappeared.” Zach reminded me.
“Yes, but” My voice broke, “he might not have been dead then! I want to go and see him again.”
“Cam.” Zach sighed and hugged me, pulling me up against him as I sobbed openly now. I did truly miss my father but it was only now that I let on to how much I missed him, when Bex, Liz, Macey and I had found the grave all had been forgotten in a hurry. I hadn’t been myself for one and for two the Circle had been after me. Then I remembered, a week after Joe Solomon woke up from his six month long coma, a week after my aunt, Townstead, Zach, Becky, Macey and I had returned from my fathers grave, my mother and I had sat and talked.
We had agreed that we would hold another funeral at the end of that term.
We had agreed not to tell Grandma or Grandpa Morgan.
We had agreed that there had been a lot of good days.
We had agreed that I was my fathers legacy.
When I had recovered myself a little I sat up straight again, “Do you remember when we came back from the grave?”
“Yeah.” Zach nodded.
“Mom and I agreed that we should have another funeral.” I explained.
“I guess it kind of got forgotten about?” Zach asked.
“Yeah.” I nodded, “But I think now would be a good time, now it’s all over.”
“Of course.” Zach kissed my cheek, “How about you have a sleep?”
“I don’t want to.” I shook my head, though my eye lids were heavy from crying.
“Please Gallagher Girl?” He asked, “You’ll thank me for it.”
“I thank you for a lot of things.” I smiled. Leaning against his shoulder I closed my eyes and quickly fell in to a deep sleep.
*
I spent the next day in our apartment, doing laundry and reports, while Zach made phone calls to the relevant people about our safe return.
I went to bed early on the Thursday night but was unable to sleep. If I listened carefully I could hear Zach on the phone to someone in the lounge.
“… broke down on the plane… Yes she remembers that, she told me about what she and Rachel had agreed… She wants to do it still… I think it would put both of them at ease, and you… A final goodbye… Yes but this time you know that he’s…” Zach didn’t speak again for a while, “I know Joe, it won’t… Let me know?… Okay, bye.” I heard the click as he rested the receiver in its hold and sighed. I sniffed and wiped my eyes as I rolled over in bed. Hearing the footsteps near my door I closed my eyes and pretended to sleep as my room door opened a crack, “Good night Gallagher Girl.”
Good night Blackthorne Boy I thought.
