Chapter 49
Joe
As Zach left Rachel stood up and came to my arms I pulled over to the sofa and sat down with her on my knee, “What is it?” I murmured in to her hair.
“Why wasn’t I there for her Joe?” Rachel sniffed, “I should have been there for her to talk to, I should have at least seen that she was acting out of character!”
“If you’re thinking like that then you can easily blame me,” I sighed, “You were worried about me that summer, it’s my fault.”
“I’m a dreadful mother,” Rachel cried in to my shoulder.
“No you’re not,” I stroked her back and kissed her head again, “She still loves you,”
“I begged her to tell me what she remembered, she wouldn’t though,”
I rolled my eyes, of course Cammie wouldn’t tell her what had happened, she wouldn’t want to hurt her mother like that.
“It’s okay Rachel,” I soothed her, “She’s okay,”
“What are we going to do about Catherine?” She sniffed,
“I’ll sort it,” I promised her, “You just worry about that sister and niece of yours,” I lifted her chin so she looked at me, “I’ll talk to Cam,”
“Thank you,” She sniffed and rested her head on my shoulder while I soothed her.

“Hey Joe,” Bex smiled to me as I went in to Cammie’s room.
“Why don’t you two go and get some breakfast with Liz and Macey?” I told them, giving Zach a look.
“Yeah,” He said slowly and kissed Cammie’s head before her got off the bed, “Come on Bex,”
Bex hesitated but soon followed when Zach pulled her arm.
“How you doing?” I sat on the end of the bed as Cammie sat up.
“I’m still sore,” She held my gaze, confused.
“You know I didn’t mean how you felt,” I shook my head.
“Joe,” Cam shook her head, “I’m not ready to talk about it if that’s what you’re here for, I just want to forget about it,”
“Just because you forgot about it for a couple of years doesn’t mean you can now,” I shook my head at her, “It’s not that simple Cammie,”
“How would you know?” She spat, “You weren’t there! You weren’t tortured!” She leant forward and clutched her chest.
“Lie back,” I instructed her, she did as I said as I passed her the oxygen mask.
“I’ve broken a rib,” Cam mumbled, “It’s bruised my lung and …”
“I know,” I rolled my eyes, I’d already read the file last night when she’d been asleep in here with Zach for a short while. I knew every broken bone, every bruise, every cut and every stitch. And I knew the pain, after all I’d been in that position once.
“It hurts doesn’t it?” I whispered.
“Which bit?” Cam looked to me drowsily, “The falling from a plane, running afterwards, or remembering the torture you’ve been through?”
