Chapter 35

Cammie

“Come in,” Mom called to me as I knocked on their bedroom door.

She was sat on the bed with Dad, hugging him tightly. His eyes were puffy and tears streaked his cheeks.

“Please don’t beat yourself up dad,” I sighed and joined their hug, Dad snorted and kissed my head.

“How can’t I?” He sighed, “I missed my little girl growing up and now she’s got a man of her own,”

He was upset because I was seeing Zach? No, he was upset because he’d missed me going through high school, and now I wasn’t his little girl.

“You’ll always be my dad though, nothing changes that.” I pointed out to him, at a loss about what else I could say to him. Mom must have realised that I didn’t know what to say and helped me out a little, “She’s right Matt, you did what a lot of dad’s couldn’t do, you left her to keep her safe. If you ask me that takes more guts than what most men have.”

I smiled my thanks to mom and she squeezed my arm before she got up and left dad and I.

“What’s on the end of the necklace?” Dad asked reaching out to the chain around my neck. I looked down and took the ring to show him, he nodded in approval at it’s words.

“I believe Joe when he says he’s a good kid,” Dad sniffed,

“I love him too Dad,” I whispered, “I love you too,”

“I know you do kiddo,” He held me almost too tightly and I smelt his clothes, they smelt of smoke from the fire and pine.

“I missed you daddy,” I whispered, “But I don’t blame you for anything,”

“Why not?” Dad sighed, “You should hate me,”

“When I was little you did all sorts with me,” I sniffed myself, “You were always taking me out on a weekend or playing with me,” I thought back to exactly three years ago, “And then you left and for a long time I thought it would be better to have both my parents, some of the time,” I wiped my eyes, “It was only three years ago; when Bex’s parents were away for christmas in Africa perhaps together, probably not, that I realised how lucky I was to have one parent most of the time,”

It made me sound like a dreadful daughter but it was the truth, I had been better off because he had left because I knew mom would always be there.

“You might think that makes you sound dreadful,” Dad spoke in to my hair, “But you have no idea how much better it makes me feel,”

“Good,” I mumbled in to his shoulder, “Now go and thank Joe,”

“Okay,” Dad kissed my hair as we both got up.

“Where were you?” Zach asked, he lay on the bed in some flannel pyjamas.

“Dad was upset about things,” I told him as I lay with my head on his shoulder, curling up tighter as the wind rattled the window.

“Did he ask about the necklace?”

“He said it made you seem serious,” I told him,

“You like it?” Zach checked,

“Of course I do!” I looked to him, “I love it!”

“Not cheesy?”

I pulled a face and pretended to consider it, “A little but not in a bad way,” I frowned, “Why?”

“I’d been reading up on them online,” Zach admitted, “A lot of people said they were cheesy things for high school kids,”

“I disagree,” I took out the ring and held it up to the light, “I think it’s just right for us, we’re too young to get engaged and married but I want people to know that I’m not available,”

“So do I,” Zach agreed and kissed my hair, “I want them to know you’re mine,”

“Mr possessive,” I commented,

“That’s what Bex said,” Zach mumbled thoughtfully. I jumped up and glared at him, “You spoke to Bex!?”

“Emailed her,” Zach corrected, pulling me back down to his chest, “Just to ask what she thought of it,”

“What did she say?” I laughed.

“She said she thought you’d like the idea but to her it made me seem a bit possessive,” He shrugged, “She suggested the necklace too,”

“You know she’ll have told Grant?” I smiled, voicing my thoughts, “He’ll think you’ve gone soft!”

“I don’t care,” Zach smiled contently, “Not at all,”

“Correction,” I giggled, “You have gone soft,”

Zach chuckled and leant down to kiss me, I shivered as tingles ran over my skin and the wind howled outside.

He pulled away leaving me breathless, “It’s been a long day,” He murmured.

“I’ve not given you your present yet,” I whispered to him.

“I was starting to think you hadn’t got me one,” He rolled his eyes as I reached out to the drawer at the side of the bed and pulled out the leather pouch. I passed it to Zach and kissed his cheek, “Merry Christmas,”

He popped the press stud button on the pouch and pulled out the metallic contents. An army knife, he had lost his somewhere in Kabul and I had been putting him off from getting another since.

After inspecting the different tools on the knife Zach set it down and hugged me tightly, “Thank you,”

“Sorry it’s not as meaningful as a ring,” I told him as he got up and got his wallet out.

“Why …” I frowned as he held out a dollar bill to me, “What’s that for?”

“It’s rumoured that giving a knife as a gift can sever the relationship ties,” He explained, “If I pay you for it you’ve not given it to me,”

I rolled my eyes and took the bill, “Since when where you superstitious?”

“Not risking it,” He told me as he got back in to the bed, “Not at all,”
