Cammie
Chapter 18
"Cam, will you please sit still." Liz rolled her eyes as I began to drum my fingers on the arm of my seat.
"Cut her some slack Liz," Jonas told her, "she's desperate to see her mom."
"I'm sure there's been no change Cam, they'd have rung us otherwise." Macey told me.
"I know." I sighed, "I know."
"Ladies and gentlemen, will you please take your seats for landing." Bex's voice came over the speaker.
Half an hour later I hurried up the steps of the mansion and opened the door, my friends close behind.
"You're back then?" Joe came sauntering down the grand staircase with his hands buried in the pockets of his jeans.
"Yeah we are." Bex came in after me and dropped our bags on the floor.
"How's Mom?" I asked as Joe walked over to us, looking down as he did.
"She's..." Joe looked up smiling, "...she's awake."
"Why didn't you tell me!?" I shouted and dropped my bags before running to the infirmary.
"Mom!" I sobbed as I flew in the door. She was sat up talking to dad. As I threw my arms around her mom laughed and hugged me back, "Easy Cam."
"Sorry." I sniffed and pulled back, "You're alright."
"I'm fine." Mom nodded, "Just tired and tender."
"I was so worried." I sobbed as I smiled.
"Rachel." Zach came in and smiled.
"Hi Zach." Mom took my hand and lay back against the pillows. She looked pale and tired but she was okay and that was what mattered.
That evening I sat next to Mom's bed, dad had gone upstairs to get a shower.
"I'm not staying in here any longer." Mom sighed and pushed her duvet back. The doctors had removed her drip and had checked all her reflexes, and everything was normal.
"Are you sure mom?" I asked her.
"Yeah." She insisted picking up a set of folded clothes out of the drawer.
"Well everyone's going up for dinner now." I got up.
"Exactly." Mom nodded, "Go on."
I nodded and headed up to the hall.
"How's Rach?" Dad asked me as Joe reached out for the door handle to let us in to the hall.
"Fine." I nodded, "I think we should tell the students."
"We might as well." Patricia nodded.
"I'll do it." I told them as we walked in and up to the teachers platform. As I stepped up to the podium I glimpsed Mom on crutches looking around the corner of the doors. The girls quietened as I began, "Ladies, as you are aware the headmistress was unconscious recovering from numerous injuries. I am glad to inform you that she's..." I trailed off and looked to the door as Mom swung in to the room on her crutches.
"She's right here ladies." Everyone turned to look at her and gasped. There was an obvious bulge on her thigh where the bandages covered her shot wound and her pale arms contrasted with the dark bruises.
The girls stood up and began clapping, as did the teachers behind me. Mom made her way slowly up the aisle.
"Thank you, everyone." Mom took my place at the podium as the girls quietened, "I can't say I know how much you know but I want to thank you all."
"Enjoy your dinner girls." I nodded as I took my seat.
That evening I turned the light off in the bathroom and looked around the dimly lit room, Grant and Jonas had been put up in two beds in the Common Room leaving Zach and I sharing a single bed.
Bex, Liz and Macey were already asleep but Zach was lying looking up at the ceiling.
"What are you thinking?" I asked him as I squeezed in next to him. I wasn't worried about waking any of the others, Bex and Liz slept like logs and Macey had her noise cancelling headphones on.
"About you." Zach smiled and kissed the back of my neck.
"What about me exactly?" I asked as I lay my head on his shoulder and he wrapped his arms around me.
"How happy you looked at dinner tonight." Zach twisted so he was looking at me, "It's the first time since we came back that I saw you relaxed."
"Mom was okay, dad was there and you were there." I smiled lovingly to him, "Of course I was relaxed."
Zach reached down and used a hand to tuck my hair behind my ear, "I will sleep happy tonight."
"I love you Zach." I sighed as I closed my eyes, all I could hear was his rhythmic heartbeat and breathing.
"I love you too Cam, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you." He kissed my cheek as I laughed gently, "Me too Zach." I closed my eyes, "Me too."
