Abby
Chapter 26
“Where are we?” I squinted against the orange light of the sunset shining in my face.
“Almost there.” Edward told me as he turned off the highway. He’d been driving through the day since we left the school in the early hours of the morning.
“Where’s there?” I smiled to him.
“You’ll see.” Edward chuckled as I looked out the window.
Half an hour later we turned on to a dirt track that lead in to a woods.
“Here we are.” Edward stopped the car and got out to get my door. I looked up to the small log cabin that stood before us and smiled to Edward.
“You own this place?”
He shrugged and smiled, “I bought it as a holiday home years ago, never got much chance to use it though.”
“It’s lovely.” I smiled to him and leant up to kiss his cheek, “You look tired, I’ll make us something to eat and then we could go to bed?”
“You’ll have a job, there’s no food in the cupboards.” Edward smiled to me as my face fell.
“We’d better go shopping then.” I sighed, not really in the mood.
“I’ll go shopping you stay here.” Edward told me. I gasped and rested a hand over my heart.
“You’re trusting me!?” I laughed, as he shook his head.
“Edward,” I grabbed his arm as he turned to get the bags out of the car.
“Hmm?” He turned back to me as I stepped in to his arms.
“It’s just us now, you don’t need a hard mask.” I murmured, resting my chin on his chest.
“I know.” He tucked a lose bit of hair behind my ear, “Just like the other year.”
“Exactly.” I smiled to him remembering the time we’d spent hunting down the circle.
“So are you coming or staying?” He asked me.
“I’ll come with you.”
That night after a pizza tea and hot cocoa I lay in bed waiting for Edward to join me. I liked this now, how relaxed he was when the others weren’t around. How he didn’t have that steely mask on when it was just us. I just wished he’d let his guard down when we were with my family, then perhaps they wouldn’t be so amazed about why we love each other.
“What are you thinking love?” Edward asked as he pulled the duvet back and slipped under the covers beside me. Instinctively I moved over to him and rested my head on his shoulder.
“Not much.” I sighed and closed my eyes, “How long do you think we can stay here?”
“Not too long, it’s on the grid and it all traces back to me.” He sighed, “I shouldn’t have bought you here, it’s dangerous.”
“Don’t talk like that.” I sighed, “I like it here, it’s nice.”
“But it’s not safe.” He insisted.
“Edward.” I snapped at him, “Stop being so pessimistic, nothing’s going to happen here, I’ve seen at least ten triggers just driving back from the store.” I sat up to look at him properly, “You were right in the first place, we’re safe here for a while.”
Edward sighed and pulled me back down to him, “I don’t want anything to happen to you.”
“Trust me, I’ll be fine.” I smiled.
“I wasn’t worried about that, I was worried about the implications for me.” He joked.
“Night.” I sighed after a few moments of quiet.
“Goodnight.” Edward kissed the top of my head.
A lot of people see him as a hard faced man who doesn’t have any fun. People listening in on that conversation may say he’s afraid of danger.
But I knew different. He’s not scared of danger, he’s scared of my getting hurt. Why? Because he’s protective and doesn’t want to mess up with our baby.
He hasn’t admitted it to me, but I know. With Edward it’s all the things that go unsaid that you have to pay attention to.
When I woke up the next morning the bed beside me was empty.
“Edward?” I called out to the darkness.
“Yes?” He flicked the lights on, making me duck under the covers and moan, “The light, it burns!”
Edward laughed and I heard the clunk as he placed something down on the bedside table.
“Did you sleep well?”
“Very.” I replied still from under the covers, “Turn the lights off it’s too bright.”
“Make me.” Edward chuckled, I barely got to register his words before he pulled down the cover, once again blinding me.
I threw my arm over my eyes to shield them from the light.
“You are wicked.” I mumbled.
“I know.” Edward chucked, “Come on, I want to take you out today.”
He got up off the bed and walked to the door, I sat up and frowned, he was already dressed in jeans and a open collared shirt.
“Is this Edward Townsend being romantic?” I cocked an eyebrow.
“Is there a problem with that?” He smirked.
“I wasn’t complaining.” I laughed and threw a pillow at him, of course he caught it and threw it back.
“Come on, I’ve left a dress in the bathroom for you.”
I pulled a face, it would be one of those long beach dresses which I hated. Why won’t he let me wear my short dresses? It’s not like he couldn’t take anyone who came on to me … then again, maybe that isn’t such a good idea.
With a final sigh I pushed the covers back and headed in to the bathroom.
