Chapter 12

The girls and Preston were back in Mom’s office as I walked through the door that Joe was holding open for me.

“Your dad must have sent it.” Mom told me as I looked at the computer screen. He was sat in front of the camera in a cozy looking log cabin.

“Press play.” I told them.

“Rachel, this was the last time I saw Cammie. I rescued her from them and took her to a Convent in the Alps.” Dad explained, “It was about three miles from where she was being held and you’ll find the address at the end of this message. Cam knew I rescued her and took her to the convent. I stayed with her for two days. She was in a pretty bad way. I had to leave her when I found out that the Circle were following me, I lead them off her trail. I told the nuns at the convent not to tell her about me at all.” He paused, “I know you think I’m dead Rachel, and I had to be. They wanted to destroy the Academy, to kill every teacher and student. They think there’s a secret to it that apparently I know. Abby has access to a chip, the exact details are there.” He looked away from the camera and when he looked back there was a gloss over his eyes, “Rachel, there’s not a day gone by where I haven’t thought about you and Cam. I always wander if Joe’s looking after you, if you’re missing me. I know the answers though.”

I frowned and looked to Mom, who was intently watching the video, no doubt for the second time.

“Not always Rachel but sometimes, I’m there. I’m watching. Remember when Joe first started teaching at the school? I made a deal with myself; every year as a birthday present to myself I will come and see you and Cam.” He smiled, “I didn’t do that last year, I couldn’t bring myself to… Anyway, Cam’s Sophomore year, the year Joe started working there. You two went out for my birthday.”

“The dance?” Bex whispered.

“Yeah.” Joe nodded.

“I saw you two dancing in the barn that night. You weren’t happy though were you Rach? I don’t blame you for trying to distract yourself and I don’t blame you for turning to Joe.” He sighed and wiped his eyes, “I wouldn’t even blame you if you turned to Joe after I’ve told you this Rachel… but I think Cameron might be dead. Otherwise she would have come home and told you that I was alive and I know that would mean you were looking for me. It wouldn’t take you a year to find me. I’m sorry love, I’ve not seen her since I left the convent and I can’t go back incase the Circle are there but I can’t believe it would take exactly a year for all of this to work out otherwise. Just remember Rachel, I love you but I don’t blame you if you don’t love me anymore.”

Dad reached forward and pressed a button which switched off the camera and a moment later the address for the convent came up with a date, the first of October, it was exactly one year since I had woken up at the convent.

“Your dad thinks you’re dead?” Preston frowned as the disk ejected itself.

“Apparently so.” I nodded and walked over to the window to look out in to the blackness of the night.

Zach followed me and rested his hand in mine, “Gallagher girl?”

“What’s the date?” I asked, loud enough for everyone to hear.

“October nineteenth.” Edward replied.

Exactly one month. I thought as I focused on the reflections in the window.

“What are you thinking Cam?” Abby asked.

“We have exactly one month until Dad’s birthday,” I turned back to them, “let’s make it one to remember.”

“Oh I like her style.” Macey smiled as I turned back to the group, even mom was smiling at my plan.

“Tomorrow we head for the convent.” I smiled.

“Apart from Abby.” Edward held up a finger, “Abby stays here.”

“No way!” Abby argued, “I’m coming.”

“Why can’t Abby come?” Bex asked, out of all the adults in the room, Abby was the one Bex could relate most to.

“Well…” Abby blushed.

“Spill.” Bex told her.

“Cammie’s going to be a cousin.” Abby smiled.

“No way!” Bex grinned.

“Congrats!” Macey laughed.

“You’re pregnant!?” Liz squealed.

“Yeah.” Edward hugged her, “Which is why you’re staying here.”

“No way.” Abby told him, “Do you think Rachel stopped doing missions when she was preggers?”

“Only in the fifth month.” Mom agreed, “But you will have to slow down Abigail.”

“Every woman is different Rachel.” Abby replied.

“Yeah but knowing you, while my back is turned you’ll get in to another knife fight and I’ll have to save your backside as repayment for Buenos Aires.” Edward rolled his eyes.

“I’m not stupid enough to get in to a knife fight where there’s more of them than there are of me.” Abby remarked, “And besides, that was a beach ball of liquid nitrogen back then-”

“So that’s where that rumor came from.” Bex’s eyes lit up as Abby continues as if she hadn’t heard her, “… this time it’s real.”

And she couldn’t have been more right.
