Chapter 8
That evening Mom helped me out of the car as Patricia Buckingham headed out towards us.
"You're all back." She sighed in relief.
"Just." Zach muttered glancing at me, Patricia looked between us confused, "What do you mean Mr Goode?"
"Cam was shot." Abby replied, "She's fine, if a little tender."
"I can talk for myself." I complained.
"Come on guys, I want Creme Brûlée!" Bex called, she was halfway to the front door of the school with her arms folded.
"We're coming." Macey called.
"Honestly," I looked to Mom as we began to walk towards the school, "if there's one thing I miss the most it's the Creme Brûlée."
Mom laughed and replied, "And there was me thinking you were going to say it was our Sunday nights!"
After we had all washed and changed, and Bex had redressed my bandages, we headed down to the grand hall. Being graduates of the school, Bex, Macey, Liz, Zach and I got to sit up on the teachers table.
"This is weird." Bex whispered to me as we took our seats.
"Italian Bex." Liz reminded her before saying It will be good practice, in the designated language for the evening.
"It's weird being sat up here." I told Abby as she and Townstead sat next to me.
"You get used to it." Abby whispered back as Mom stood at the podium and the room quietened.
"Women of the Gallagher Academy, who comes here?" She sounded the same as ever, stood up there, looking out over the students. That's part of what a good spy is, someone who can carry on their everyday life as if they hadn't just watched their daughter recover from a poisoned bullet, as if her husband was definitely dead, as if they weren't being threatened.
"We are the sisters of Gillian."
"Why do you come?"
"To learn her skills. Honor her sword. And keep her secrets."
I found myself murmuring the responses in unison with the rest of the school.
"To what end do you work?"
"To the cause of justice and light."
"How long will you strive?"
"For all the days of our lives."
"You may be seated." Mom nodded, "I trust that in my absence you have all continued to work by that motto?" She paused and glanced around the room, "As you may have noticed, there have been some old faces around the school. All of you apart from the first years should remember Cameron, Rebecca, Macey, Elizabeth and Zach." Mom glanced back to us, a glimmer of a smile fleeting for less than a second on her lips, "I expect you to make them feel welcome." She hesitated for a moment as she looked to her notes and bit her bottom lip, she was debating something.
"A little over four weeks ago, every single one of us in this room received a note." A muttering went around the room.
"Cam, what's she doing?" Bex muttered to me.
"I don't know." I watched her carefully as she continued.
"We all know what the note said. But what most of you don't know is, who. Who was the note referring to?" She looked across the tables, "I know all the rumors, the theories and so on but there's only one thing that you all need to know... no person or people will get in to, or out of, this school without my say so. Therefore, you are all safe."
