Chapter 5
I lay in my hiding place that night, looking up through the skylight at the patterns of stars and swirls of cloud, illuminated by the moon. I thought about my Dad, he didn't feel dead, I didn't feel it in my bones that I'd lost him.
"What are you thinking?" Zach came and sat with me.
"Dad, it doesn't feel like he's dead." I sighed and turned my head to look at him, "What Joe said didn't help."
"Bex and Macey are out there having a go at him now." Zach took my hand, "We all agree he was out of order.
"I reacted badly too." I shrugged and jumped up.
"Where are you going now?" Zach stood and followed me.
"To bed. I need to sort myself out for tomorrow." I sighed and halted as Zach grabbed my hand and pulled me in to him.
"I love you." Zach told me, "Don't forget that Gallagher Girl."
I smiled to him softly before resting my head on his chest and closing my eyes. Zach leant down and kissed the top of my head as he encased me with his arms. We stood there for a moment before I replied to him, "I never will."
"Come on." Zach pulled me along with an arm around my shoulder. As we walked past Mom's office we heard voices coming from within.
"...six months until the anniversary."
"I know Joe!" Mom replied, "But Cam and I have enough on our plates right now, don't you think!?"
"Yes Rachel. I didn't mean for it to turn in that direction, you know I wouldn't want to hurt her." Joe replied.
"Then go and apologise to her, not me!" Mom snapped.
I looked away as the door opened and Zach tensed a little, "Joe." He nodded stiffly.
"Cammie,"Joe sighed but I refused to meet his gaze, "I'm sorry about the way the discussion went. You know I wouldn't have meant to hurt you like that."
"We'll you should have thought." Zach snapped back.
"Zach." I quietly stopped him before looking back to Joe finally.
"Cam, I realise that I should have thought before I set the girls their mission but we don't always think of the implications do we?" Joe pleaded now.
"I know that from experience." I nodded, "So I accept your apology."
"Thank you." Joe sighed.
"We'll see you in the morning?" I asked him.
"At breakfast." Joe nodded.
"So what exactly was the lead?" I asked Liz as Macey drove us out of the school, my Mom and the other adults followed us in a second car.
"I had a computer hacking emails with key words in, there's some guys that have been corresponding with more than one." Liz explained.
"What did the emails say?" Bex leant forward and asked.
"Here." She opened her bag and took out a folded paper.
-Queen of France is afraid, she's called in back up for protection.
-What does she think of her King?
-She's not suggested any specifics but I know that we have to be careful, remember she's got WiseGuy and Chameleon on her side.
-We needn't worry about them, one is just a kid and the other we know his tricks.
-I'd still be wary, they took out Circle.
"I managed to get the address of the guy that's wary of you." Liz explained as I passed back the paper, "We'll unpack and then go after him."
"I'm going alone." I told them.
"Here we go." Macey muttered.
"Why?" Bex and Zach asked.
"They only know that I'm on her team, if they don't know about you lot we have the element of surprise." I told them, "We don't reveal we have more back up until we need to."
"I'm with her." Liz nodded.
"Alright." Bex sat back and sighed.
"Can I at least chauffeur you?" Zach pushed.
"If you must." I nodded.
"Thank you." He smiled and kissed me.
Three hours later we pulled up at the safe house, it as a large, two floored, wooden lodge. On the ground floor there was a fair sized open plan kitchen, dining room and lounge with two bedrooms and a toilet off to one side. Upstairs there were two more bedrooms and a large bathroom.
I came down the stairs after having a quick shower and noticed that Liz had already taken over the kitchen table with her computers and various other devices. Joe was cooking something for dinner in the kitchen while Zach spoke to the other adults and Bex.
"Where's Macey?" I asked.
"She's unpacking some stuff." Liz told me without looking up.
"Shall we go Gallagher Girl?" Zach asked as he reached out for the car key on the cabinet by the door.
"Yeah." I followed him, "We'll be back soon." I smiled to everyone as we left.
"Can I help you?" A man in his mid forties asked as he opened the door of the desolate hall Liz had given Zach directions for.
"Cameron Morgan." I smiled to him, "I believe you've been expecting me?"
"Oh we have." The man smiled as he stood aside and allowed me in.
"Who was it?" A second man called from the door on the right that lead to the main hall that I was shown through to.
"Only me." I smiled to him as his face dropped.
"How'd you...?"
"Oh that's not important." I waved off, "I'll tell you what is important though," I held up a finger to stop either of them from speaking, "why have you been sending my mother death threats?"
"We've only done so under orders." The first man smiled, but I didn't miss the glare that the second gave him.
"Who's orders?" I asked.
"You know him, or you think you do." He chuckled.
"I think I know a lot of people." I retorted, "You'll have to be a bit more specific."
Both men chuckled again before the first responded, "Well, he doesn't go to your little school."
"He wouldn't, it's a girls school." I glared.
"Who's to say he's of school age?"
"Tell me!" I shouted.
"He used to be in the Circle."
"We bought the circle down."
"He wants revenge."
"Tell him to come and get it himself." I told them.
"He will." The first man laughed, a dark booming laugh, "He'll get revenge on your whole family Cameron."
I shook my head and turned to leave.
"Cameron." The first man stopped me.
"Yes?" I slowly turned back to them and could have sworn I heard a quiet click as he continued, "The group didn't get what they wanted off your dad but I doubt they ever will get it off him."
I frowned at his words but turned and left anyway, getting in the car as I thought through the words again.
"Anything useful?" Zach asked as he started the engine.
"They sent the notes under orders from someone else, apparently I know him." I sat back and frowned, "They recon the splinter group of the circle didn't get what they wanted off dad and basically confirmed that he's dead."
"Question is who did it th-" Zach stopped as I clutched my side and bent forward, I'd been shot.
"Zach." I whispered, lifting my hand away from my side, a sticky red liquid smeared on my palm.
"Why didn't you say?"
"I didn't realise." I whispered, "I don't know why." My voice shook as I took off as many layers as I could and pressed them against the wound.
"Stay awake Gallagher Girl, keep talking to me." Zach encouraged as the speed of the car increased.
"I'm trying Zach." I whispered, my breaths coming quicker as my vision blurred. I was scared. Sure, I'd been shot before, I even thought that I'd die the last time. Now there was something new though, fear. I'd risked my life in the past for a sister but now that I'd been shot in the middle of a mission, I was scared of what might happen.
"Stay with me Cam." Zach said again, "Just fifteen minutes to the safe house."
"Zach I'm scared, it hurts," I told him holding in my sobs, "more than last time." I could feel weak stomach cramps coming on.
"Why Cam? Why does it hurt more? How?"
"Cramps." Was all I could reply.
"There's no way a gun shot would cause cramp." Zach shook his head.
"I know." I whispered, already putting two and two together.
"Cam, hold on, please for me." Zach begged now.
"I'm sorry Zach." I whispered as my eyes grew heavy and I let them close.
"Cam? No, no, no!" I heard the revs on the engine increase and the sound of horns as Zach probably drove recklessly towards the safe house. I heard the sound of gravel under the tires as he pulled up and cut the engine. He got out of the car and lifted me out, "Please be okay Cam."
"Cammie?" Mom called.
"She's been shot." Zach told her, I felt the jolts of movement as he walked towards her, "And poisoned."
"Liz!" My mom screamed.
"What- Cammie?" Bex's voice came next as a door opened and I was taken inside.
"Cam, wake up, please baby, wake up." My mom begged, rubbing up and down my arm. I wanted to open my eyes and tell her how cold I was but I couldn't.
"Liz, get a blood sample." Joe told her, there was the ripping sound of paper, "Bex go to this address and do whatever you have to to get the medicine that I will text you."
"Okay." I heard footsteps.
"Cammie." Mom cried, "Please, wake up."
"Is she warm Rach?" Joe asked.
"Yeah, feverish." Mom replied.
"Get a damp cloth for her face."
No, I'm frozen! I had to tell them, they needed to know, "Mom." I whispered, holding her hand as tight as I could, "Mom- It's...cold... so, so cold." I whispered, barely loud enough to hear.
"It's okay Cam, it's okay." She hushed me, "We'll make you better."
"Cameron Morgan, you will get better." Joe Solomon insisted as I lost my consciousness altogether.
