Chapter 3
"Thought we might need an extra couple of pairs of hands." Bex's thick english accent rang out as she got out of her limo with her parents the next afternoon.
"It's good to see you." I smiled and hugged her.
"What's the problem Cammie?" Grace asked me once I'd greeted them.
"Come inside." I told them, "Liz and Macey are waiting to hear as well." I explained as we walked up the Grand Staircase.
"So now will you tell us?" Macey asked as I went in with the others.
"The whole school got sent a death threat, Mom got one saying she was the reason." My explanation was short and to the point, I didn't see a reason for messing around.
"Who from?" Mrs Baxter asked.
"We don't know, that's what we're trying to find out." I told them, "It wasn't just the fact that she got a threat though," I hesitated, "there's more to it than that."
"What?" Bex asked, "What's the key detail Cam?"
"The people that are coming for mom..." I looked down and swallowed, doing my best to stay strong, "... They said that they found... Dad."
"Were they the ones to..." Macey trailed off.
"We don't know." I shook my head, "Abby and Joe think it could be a possibility but nobody's sure."
"What do you want us to do?" Bex asked.
"We have three leads, one here in America, one in Rome and one in France." I told them.
"We'll take France." Mr Baxter volunteered.
"Thanks." I smiled to him, "Macey, you and I will take Rome."
"Why Macey?" Bex crossed her arms and frowned.
"A because Preston is there and B because your American needs some serious touching up." I smiled.
"Grace, Abe." Mom opened the office door and smiled, "What are you doing here?"
"Cam called Bex and she bought us along." Abe explained.
"Thank you." Mom smiled at them, "Thank you all."
"Well, isn't this quite the reunion." Joe and Abby stood behind Mom grinning from ear to ear. We all crammed in to the small office space and talked. Had there not have been the letters it would have been a perfect reunion unfortunately, when you're a spy, more often than not, things aren't perfect.
Everyone went to their rooms to get washed and changed before dinner but I hung back to talk to my mom.
"Cam, sweetheart, you don't have to do all this." She insisted.
"Mom, I want to do it." I told her, "You did the same for me all those times, no matter what you said you were really doing." I thought back to when she had found me dying on the street after Max Edwards had been killed, she had said that she was following him but deep down we both knew that she knew I was in trouble. Call it a sixth sense but it was true, Mom and I knew when something was up with the other. Somewhere in my head, before she even rung me, there was something telling me that something was wrong with her. Perhaps that had been why I'd been so upset on the flight home from Kabul.
"You're so grown up sweetheart." She sighed and stroked my cheek, "Look at you, taking charge of all this, that should be me."
"It was you mom, when it was me under threat." I countered, "You can't be the leader when it's you under threat."
