I added a bit on the end so YES RE READ IT!!!
Chapter 40
Over the next few nights I slept in my parents room, well, I tried to sleep. I couldn’t help but wonder what connection the Senator had with Abby, Edward, Mom and Dad even though that was what the girls and I had spent the days doing/
Zach had left with Solomon after dinner on the night we had arrived and I couldn’t help but wonder if I’d made the right decision to send them away.
I picked up my phone and squinted as I looked at the screen, 5 AM.
“I might as well get up,” I muttered to myself.
I went to mom’s office and smiled softly at the picture on her desk, we had tried to find her on the tracker but it had obviously been removed as we were lead to a field of corn. I knew it was painful to have a tracker removed and could only hope that she was alright after it.
I frowned as I noticed an envelope propped against the desk lamp and took it to open.
Who’s going to be next Cameron?
I thought about what it was saying, they were going to get someone else, I was certain about that. Who though?
My mom, my dad, my aunt, my uncle. I thought, But the Senator doesn’t fit in!
“What’s that?” Bex came in and nodded to the paper in my hands, I passed it to her as I flopped down in the seat, “Either Macey or me,” I voiced my guess, “After all they have my parents and her parents,”
“Don’t say that,” Macey came in with Liz and scanned the note over Bex’s shoulder.
“Cam,” Macey looked to me, “We need to get you out of here,”
“And we don’t need to keep you safe?” I asked her, “We need a safe house and quite simply haven’t got one, we can’t stay here because we’re putting the girls at risk. So where do we go?”
“I know a place,” Liz looked up, “It’s Jonas’ but he won’t mind, his parents own it, it’s a ski lodge on the top of a mountain not far from here.”
“Off the grid?” Bex checked.
“Yeah,” Liz nodded, “It has to provide its own electric because no grid wires could get up there,”
“We need to see Joe and Zach,” Macey pointed out, “Check they’re both okay,”
“Okay, we’ll meet them there, can someone get a secure line to them?”
“It’s been four days,” Liz rolled her eyes, “Not hard to find them at all,”
We arrived that afternoon at the safe house, Liz set about setting up her computers while I looked around, on the ground floor there was a large lounge, on the left wall there was a door that led off to a kitchen and dining room, the door on the back wall led to a double bedroom with an ensuite. In the basement there was another two bedrooms facing each other on opposite walls, one of them reminded me of a prison cell as there was a toilet and basin in the room without any separation from the bed.
Again, upstairs there was another two bedrooms, both allowing for two people and a bathroom between them.
“Zach and Joe are with my parents,” Bex told me as she came in to the room I’d picked, “They’re in Montana. Zach’s going to come here and Joe will stay with them.”
“That’s good,” I nodded, “It means if something happens to us, someones still safe.”
“Exactly,” Bex nodded as Liz came in, “I’ve managed to throw the press off about Macey’s parents.”
“Things are finally falling in to place,” I smiled, a little relieved at last.
The next evening Zach let himself in to the house,
“Zach,” I smiled and put down my mug of cocoa to hug him, he didn’t hug me back though. I frowned and stepped back from him, “What’s wrong?”
“Bex, Liz, Macey,” He looked to the others, “Go and get in the car please.” The girls didn’t argue with him as I watched them leave. I was more than worried now, “Zach,” I gave him a warning voice as he set down his bag and stepped forward to hug me, “I’m sorry Cammie,” he whispered in my ear.
Before I could react he’d twisted us so my back was to his chest and my arms pinned to my sides, he produced a cloth from somewhere and pressed it tightly to my nose and mouth.
“Zach,” I panicked and began to struggle, “No!”
“I’m sorry,” He whispered over and over in my ear as I got weaker and weaker. The last time I heard his whisper I was sure I heard his voice break but I couldn’t be sure as I fell in to unconsciousness.
