Chapter 6

Drifting in and out of consciousness I listened and tried to decipher what my friends and family were saying. From what I could gather my mother rarely left my side. Zach would sit with me for long periods of time and would ramble about one thing or another. Mom occasionally made a contribution, normally when I involuntarily mumbled something.

I could feel myself getting better, stronger, as the hours and minutes went by. I got sensation back in my extremities and then my limbs.

I fought with the weight of my eyelids, forcing them open for a moment before they clamped shut again. To anyone watching me it will have looked like my eyelids were fluttering. From the glances I got I knew Zach was sat on the side which my head was tilted.

"Zach?" I whispered, my breath picking up as I did. My lips and mouth were rough and dry, and it hurt when I breathed too heavy.

"Hush Cam." He stroked my cheek, "Don't fight it."

I let my eyes rest closed but spoke again, "Where are we?"

"We had to move because someone might have followed us or Bex back. Ironically it's the place you bought us when Bex had been shot." He told me as I started to blink again, "I- remember." My words were jagged as I tried to ignore the pain in the side of my chest. I screwed my eyes tight shut and them forced them wide open, blinking three times as they adjusted to the light. I felt completely drained of any energy I should have gained while I had been unconscious. The most I felt I could do was let my eyes dart around the small, blue room that Bex had recovered in last winter. Winter light shone in through then window, glistening off the sparkling layer of ice that covered everything outside. Finally I looked to Zach, he was wearing a blue button down shirt and a dark pair of jeans.

"Where's Mom?" I swallowed, trying to get some moisture in to my mouth.

"We've just persuaded her to go and sleep in a proper bed." Zach smiled as he continued to stroke the back of my hand which he held.

"Leave her then." I smiled a little, my eyes becoming heavy again.

"Joe said you'd be exhausted." Zach smiled slightly, "It's alright, you sleep." He told me.

"No," I refused weakly, "I need a drink."

"I'll go and tell the others and get you one." Zach stood and leant over the bed to kiss my temple. I listened as he went through the half open door and in to the main room.

"How is she?" Bex asked as he pulled the door to.

"She's," I could have sworn that I heard his voice crack in that moment, "awake."

There was a collective sigh of relief and a few remarks of, "Thank god." Or, "Finally."

"Can I see her?" Bex asked, anyone in general, her voice on the verge of breaking.

"She's pretty exhausted Bex, she really wants to sleep."

I hated the fact that Zach was right, my body was screaming at me that i needed to sleep but my heart wanted me to see my friends and family.

"Bex, you know yourself what it's like." Macey pointed out, "Remember Cam was poisoned too."

"Yeah." Bex swallowed and was about to say more when Abby interrupted her, "What do you mean, Bex knows what it's like?"

"We didn't tell them did we?" Zach asked after a moment of silence.

"Explain?" Townstead asked.

"Let me get Cam this drink." Zach responded as Bex, Liz and Macey began to explain what we spent last winter doing in Alaska.

"Sorry." Zach came in with the drink just as Bex got to the bit where she was asking for a first-aid kit on the plane.
