Chapter 21
My mouth dropped as Zach stopped in the car park of an amusement park.
"Zach..." I didn't know what to say, but when he put a finger on my lips I followed the indication that he wanted me to listen.
"Just for one day Cam, forget about everything, the school, your parents, your job, your friends, our mission." I smiled at the our as he continued, "Just for one day," Zach moved his hand to my cheek, "we will be normal."
"Okay." I smiled as Zach leant over to kiss my cheek. Getting out of the car I was greeted by the screams from roller coasters and the smell of fast food. Zach came around to my side of the car and took my hand.
"Shall we?" He smiled to me. We headed towards the ticket booth but I stopped dead when I saw the wall along side it.
Mirrors, or more correctly, 'fun' mirrors.
"What's wrong?" Zach frowned.
"When Townstead took us to the amusement park..." I nodded towards the mirrors, "I...I got him arrested... The CIA, they... Could have.."
"Hey." Zach held my face in his hands, "It's okay, he's safe now."
"Yeah." I took a breath and looked to the mirrors again, "It's fine."
The roller coaster set my heart more on edge than any attacks that I had ever experienced, the adrenalin rush as you reached the peak was greater than any mission I'd ever been in but the rush of air past your face was all too familiar to me.
"What next?" Zach asked as he collected the bag he had brought with him after we'd walked away from the roller coaster.
"I don't mind." I smiled as I held on to his arm.
“Now come on,” Zach smiled, “you must have some Idea of what you want to do?”
I looked around us, the vast area of the theme park, so much to do and so little time to do it all. I was about to open my mouth to tell Zach that I wanted to go to the Log Flume next when there was a scream from nearby.
Zach had already looked to where the scream had come from and was dragging me along as I followed the direction of the noise.
“What-” I didn’t need to finish my sentence as an explosion blew up the cafe we had been stood outside of.
“Come on.” Zach gripped my hand as we ran with the crowd towards the exit.
As we were pushed and pulled by others in the crowd our hands began to slip apart, slowly loosing each other in the crowd I began to panic as Zach got further and further ahead of me.
Calm down Cammie, I told myself, he’ll be fine just go to the car. I followed my spy instincts and let myself go with the frightened people that were fighting to get away from the danger.
When I broke free of the main gates of the park and I spotted Zach’s car I breathed a sigh of relief. Pacing up and down the side of the car was Zach, running to him I threw my arms around him.
“Thank god.” Zach wrapped his arms around me and held me tightly. His scent instantly calmed me as I buried my head in his shoulder.
“We need to get out of here.” I whispered, not really wanting to pull away from him.
“I know.” Zach pulled back, “Come on.”
Back at the hotel I took my laptop out and began to search for the estates website that we used to keep in touch.
“What are you doing?” Zach asked me as I typed.
“That attack will be all over the news,” I pointed out, “if the others hear…” I trailed off to concentrate on the task at hand.
“When you’re done can you look to see who it was aimed at?” Zach asked hesitantly.
“It won’t have been at us.” I insisted, “It couldn’t have been… we were just…” But I was defeated, I knew full well that the bomb could have been aimed at us. We could pretend to be as normal as we wanted to be but we alway would be one thing… spies.
“It’s okay.” Zach came and hugged me, “We’re safe.”
“It’s been a day Zach.” I pulled away and sighed, “Exactly.” Zach smiled to me, “A day is nothing.”
“If they’re already after us who else are they going to be after?” I whispered to Zach, afraid of anyone else hearing in our otherwise deserted room.
“They will all be fine.” Zach whispered back to me, he pulled me over to the bed where he sat us down and stroked my hair, “They’re good, they’re strong.”
“Yeah.” I nodded, “I know.”
“Calm down, Gallagher Girl.” Zach stroked my hair back as I took some deep breaths, “It’s okay.”
I pulled away from Zach and stood up, “We need to get out of here.” I closed the laptop and began to pack up.
With a smile Zach picked up his bag, “That’s more like it.”
***
I slept while Zach drove and when he got tired he slept as I drove. We back tracked, crossed over, double tracked and every other trick in the book (and some that aren’t). When I was too tired to drive any more I pulled in to the most remote corner of a services car park and killed the engine.
I sat back in my seat and closed my eyes, needing the rest.
“Why’d we stop?” Zach murmured.
“I got tired.” I admitted, “We need to eat too.”
“Yeah.” Zach sighed and sat up to look around.
“Don’t ask where we are.” I rubbed my face in an attempt to wake myself up a little, “I don’t know.”
I looked around as the car door opened and closed and I spotted Zach heading towards the building of the service station.
He came back a while later with a paper bag and a map.
“So where are we?” I asked.
“Three miles out of Scotland.” He handed me a Starbucks cup of coffee and a muffin of some description, “What do you want to do?”
I sat back in my seat and began to pick at my breakfast, “I don’t know Zach.” I sighed, “We’re meant to be lying low but I just want to go back and check on them… see that they’re all okay.”
“I know Cam.” Zach sighed sympathetically, “But we have to do this and stay low until we get a signal.”
“And what do we do until then?” I asked him.
“Take everything as it comes.” Zach smiled, “Now come on, we’ve spent too long here.”
With a smile I started the engine and sped back on to the motorway, seeing where it would take us.
