Rachel POV

Chapter 17

Mmm, that’s nice. I sighed inwardly, enjoying the soothing circles that a rough hand was drawing on my arm. My entire body ached, I knew something had happened but the last thing I remembered was the Code Black alarms going off. Why though? Why did the alarms go off? 

“Any change?” Abby’s voice came but there was no reply.

“You can’t sit with her forever.” Abby sighed and then she walked out of the room. I remembered last summer, she had said exactly the same to me when Joe had been in my position.

Speak of the devil and the devil shall appear, the next thing I heard was Joe coming in and asking,

“Have you slept?”

If Joe’s just come in who’s massaging my arm? I thought, confused.

“No.” Impossible! How… I must be dreaming! There’s no way that Matthew could be here AND getting on with Joe! “I’m worried sick about her Joe.” Okay, I must be dreaming, that’s exactly what I had said to an unconscious Joe Solomon last summer about Cammie. I decided to listen anyway and enjoy the dream.

“I know.” Joe sighed and took my other hand.

“Have you heard from the kids?”

“They don’t like being called kids anymore Matt.” Joe chuckled, “But yes, they’re on their way back.”

“They are kids really though.” Matt mused, “They are barely adults.”

“I know.” Joe nodded, “But I wouldn’t have let them out of here if I didn’t think they were ready.”

“And I owe you for that Joe.” Matt agreed, “I will owe you for that for the rest of my life.”

They were quiet for a long while, I thought the dream must have ended so I attempted to open my eyes.

“Rachel?” Joe asked, gently touching my cheek as I fought the weight of my eyelids. I gave up and let them rest half closed, just enough so I could see Joe. I sighed and took a breath, “Hey, Wise Guy.” I mumbled, my breath heavy and thick with sleep. Joe chuckled at his codename as did another male. I turned my head and I could have sworn my heart almost stopped at the sight. Matthew.

“So I wasn’t dreaming?” I smiled a little.

“Not at all Queen of France.” He leant over the bed to kiss my tender head.

“But how?” I frowned.

“Would you like me to…” Joe got up.

“No, stay Joe.” Matt shook his head as I suddenly remembered my wedding ring. I glanced down to my hand and sure enough my wedding ring from Joe was there.

“It’s all right Rachel, he knows everything.” Joe calmed me down, obviously catching my glance.

“You’re no...?” I gasped as pain shot up my left side.

“Lie back.” Matt told me as I closed my eyes.

“I’m fine.” I tried to insist, “It’s not-” I moaned and ground my teeth together.

“I’ll go and get some pain killers.” Joe hurried out as I took some slow deep breaths. When I opened my eyes Matt was sat on the edge of the bed.

“You need to relax Rach, all you need to know about right now is that you were kidnapped and beaten up, they told me they had you and I got taken as well. Cammie, Abby, Edward, Joe, Zach and the girls came and got us out of there. We were waiting for Zach’s friends to pick us up when we were shot at and you fell down a fifty foot cliff.” I looked to his hands that were holding mine.

“What have I done?” I sighed.

“Your left lung was punctured because of a couple of broken ribs, bullet wound in your left thigh. Numerous cracked or broken bones and you did have internal bleeding and a swelling of the brain.” Matt listed off.

“I feel worse for it.” I breathed as Joe came back in and reached behind the bed, producing an oxygen mask.

“Apparently that should help for now.” He told me as I held it over my face, “They’ll come and put some painkillers in your drip soon.”

“Can I go back to sleep?” I whispered, my eyes already drifting.

“You’ve got a lot of healing to do, it will be fore the best.” Matt nodded as he and Joe stood up.

“Where are you going?” I asked as Joe opened the door.

“Don’t worry, we’ll be back soon.” Matt came back and kissed my cheek, “We won’t tell the students until we’ve told Cam.”

“Cammie and the girls are on their way back with Zach, Grant and Jonas.” Joe told me, “We’re going to tell Abby and the staff.”

“Tell Abby I want to see her.” I murmured.

“I’ll tell her to come and sit with you.” Joe nodded as I drifted back to sleep, glad that my two favourite men were getting along.

"Still asleep?" Abby's voice came.

"Yeah, she's got a lot of healing to do Abby." Matt told her.

"I know."

"I'm not asleep actually." I mumbled against the oxygen mask.

"How are you feeling?" Matt asked.

"Not as sore as I did." I smiled to him, still feeling slightly drained.

"You scared us Rach." Abby told me as she took my hand.

"It's your job to make the jokes." I turned to her.

"I grew out of that." Abby shrugged.

"Well grow back in to it," I quipped, "we need a joker."

"How hard did you hit your head Rachel?" Abby laughed, "I thought you wanted me to grow up."

"You are who you are Abigail. What can I do to change that?" I sighed.

"Well by the way you treat me I always thought you were my mother." Abby smiled.

"Do you want a drink?" Matt offered me reaching out to the glass of water.

"Please." I nodded and held my hand out to take the glass from him.

"Joe said that your side was bad." Abby mentioned, "How is it?"

"Not too bad." I passed the glass back, "You said Cammie and the others were on their way home, where from?"

"They went to find the people that shot you." Joe leant in the doorway, "They found them and they've had them arrested."

"They don't know how you are." Matt told me.

"They've just landed, I was coming to see that you were awake." Joe explained.

"Can I go and-"

"No." All three of them refused me.

"You'll be too weak Rachel." Joe told me, "I'll go and tell them."

"I'll go and tell staff that they'll be back soon." Abby got up.

"Thanks guys," I smiled to them, "for everything."

"What's family for?" Abby smiled as she went with Joe.

"I missed you." Matt turned to me.

"I missed you too." I smiled to him, "And I do love you."

"I know." Matt leant over and kissed me gently as the door opened.
