Chapter 20

The boys were flying the jet over the atlantic as I sat with the girls in the back. “Mom had everything ready.” I explained as I dealt out the paperwork she had given me. 

“Even for the guys?” Bex asked as she opened her and Grant’s passports.

“Yeah.” I nodded, “They knew you were close.”

“How much is on the cards?”

“There’s four accounts, each unlimited and we all have access to them.” I told them, “If you need more ID’s head back to school but only if absolutely necessary.”

“How are we keeping in touch?” Liz asked.

“You remember the estates website?”

“Yeah.” Bex said as the others nodded.

“Just try and stay as low as possible, don’t contact anyone you don’t need to, don’t try to follow anyone… just…” I shrugged and shook my head, knowing from past experience how difficult this would be for all of us, “… just be normal.”

“Because that’s so easy.” Bex laughed.

“Don’t worry Cam.” Macey smiled to me, “We’ll be fine.”

“I said that once upon a time.” I looked down, “But I wasn’t.”

“We’re better now.” Liz shook her head, “We’re older, more experienced.”

“She’s right.” Macey smiled as she looked towards the cockpit door, “And this time we’ve all got back up.”

“Ladies, we are heading in to land so please fasten your set belts and return trays to their upright position.” Grant announced in a professional fashion.

“Right.” I took a breath as we dipped below the clouds, “Once we step off the plane we’re on our own”

“Liz, Jonas and I are going to Rome, we’ll stop with Preston for a bit before moving on.” Macey told us.

“Good.” Bex nodded, “You watch each others backs.”

“We will.” Liz nodded.

“Where are you heading?” I asked Bex.

“Grant and I are heading to my parents place, then we’ll travel around a bit.” Bex shrugged.

“What about you?” Macey asked as we thumped to the ground.

“I don’t know.” I shrugged and stood to collect our bags.

“I’ll see you when I see you.” I smiled a little as Zach came and took his bag.

“Good luck girls.” He nodded as Grant opened the plane door and we walked down to the waiting car.

“They’ll be fine.” Zach assured me as he drove away from the airport once we’d been through passport control. 

“I know.” I smiled to him, “I’m trusting the Blackthrone boys to look after them.”

“When did you work it out?” Zach smiled as he glanced to me.

“Oh you know… just as we were leaving school.” I shrugged jokingly.

Zach laughed and shook his head, “I only just found out before you.”

“Bex was saying.” I nodded, “Where are we heading then?”

“I don’t know.” Zach shrugged, “Wherever this road ends up.”

Late that night we pulled in to a motorway services  and walked in to the hotel. We were both tired due to the jet lag and just wanted to head to bed.

“Oh great.” I sighed as I walked in to the room first, rather than there being two single beds there was one, large, double bed that Zach and I would no doubt be sharing.

“What?” Zach stopped behind me, “What’s wrong with that?” He asked when he saw the bed.

“Nothing I suppose.” I smiled and shook my head as i went further in to the room, “It was just a surprise.”

“Come on.” Zach flung himself down on the bed and held his arms open to me, “Shall we get some sleep Gallagher Girl?” 

I smiled and reached out for the main light switch, leaving the room in a faint glow from the bedside lamp near to Zach. Crawling up to his side and curled up and rested my head on his chest.

Zach was soon asleep but I just lay, looking across the dark room thinking. What if’s going around in my head until the tiredness overcame me and I fell in to a restless sleep.

“How’d you sleep?” Zach asked me as he stepped out of the bathroom the next morning, I almost (Yes, only almost) fainted at the sight, he only hand a towel on!

“Not well.” I admitted, “Too many ‘what ifs’.”

“Everyone will be fine.” Zach rolled his eyes, “Now go and get dressed, I’ve got something planned.” He smiled wickedly and kissed me as I passed him on my way to the bathroom.
