Joe

I smiled to myself as I felt a body shift against me, her hair was tickling my arm, and her finger tips light against my bare chest. She sighed and went to pull away from me but I caught her hand before it left my chest. She froze instantly and I could feel her gaze on me, “Joe?” She breathed.

“I was under the impression that Doctors didn’t like you lying on the beds with patients?” I grinned with my eyes shut.

Rachel laughed and leant over me, our lips meeting hastily and desperately. I groaned as the heart monitor bleeped more incessantly making Rachel giggle. She pulled back and took my hand, “Hey,” She smiled.

I sighed and opened my eyes, “Hi,” I blinked to let my eyes adjust to the light of the room, the orange sunrise shining across the bed. I looked back to Rachel and frowned, she looked tired, “How long?” I murmured as I pulled her back down next to me, she rested her head on my shoulder and looked down to our intertwined hands, “Only three days,” She sighed, “I have slept, just not well.”

I kissed her head gently and waited for her to look up to me, “Get some sleep,”

“Cam and Zach will be here in a bit,” She shook her head.

I sighed and lay my head back, only vaguely remembering what had happened, “Are they okay?”

Rachel nodded in reassurance, “Yeah, Nat ran off from their house before anyone could get her. The kids came straight here.”

I closed my eyes and thought, “Was anyone else hurt?”

Rachel laughed and shook her head, “You took it all.”

I must’ve still been pretty drugged up, I couldn’t feel any pain anywhere on my body but I could feel the bandage that wound tightly around my middle. Rachel looked up above me and frowned, “That drip’s run out,” She got up, “I’ll go and get some more painkillers for you.”

I smiled my thanks to her as she got up and kissed me gently before leaving.

I must’ve drifted back to sleep as I woke up with a pain in my lower chest. I took a deep breath but only to find that made it worse.

“Joe?” Rachel took my hand, seeing me wince.

I looked to her and forced a smile, “It’s my chest,”

Rachel ran her fingers through my hair, smoothing it back, “They’ve put you on weaker painkillers,”

I moaned as I took another breath, “Why?”

“I don’t know,” She shook her head and squeezed my hand, “But they’ve only just gone in and will have to kick in yet,” She smiled and took my hand to her belly, “This little one’s been going mad the past few days,” I smiled and began to forget the pain as I felt the baby kick against my hand.

“Matt came and talked to me,” Rachel sighed and began to tell me about their conversation. He had decided to end their romantic relationship in one blow, he wanted me to have her. We didn’t have to fight anymore.

By the time Rachel had explained all this, the painkillers had kicked in and I could breathe a little easier.

“Hey Mom,” Cam came in with Zach, “How’s-”

I cut her off, “I thought you two were meant to be on Honeymoon?”

Zach’s face lit up when he saw me awake, “Joe!”

I looked to Rachel and rolled my eyes, “What is it with people and doubting my healing abilities?”

Cammie laughed and leant over to hug me gently, “We can’t leave you alone for five minutes!”

I looked to Zach, “Where is she now?”

“Nat?” Zach raised his eyebrows, “Grant and Bex have a lead but we don’t know how good it is,”

Cam nodded, “They refused to let us help,”

Rachel smiled, “Good,”

“Go on,” I shoed them, “Go and finish your honeymoon!”

They looked to each other and then back to me and Rachel, “Fine!” Cammie sighed, “But you have to call us if there’s anything!”

I nodded, “We will,”

Late that evening I sighed and pushed back the sheets, “Pass me those clothes,” I told Rachel.

She folded her arms, “What do you think you’re doing?”

I rolled my eyes at her, “I’m fed up of being here, we need to get back to the school.”

Rachel shook her head, “Joe, you need to rest!”

I leant forward, hiding the wince as I did, and took her hands, “I’m fine,” I insisted, “I just need to take it easier for a bit.”

Rachel sighed but didn’t argue as she got up and passed me the clothes. As they swapped hands she looked to me softly, her eyes full of worry, “I can’t let anything happen to you Joe,” She whispered, “I need you to be careful,”

I nodded and leant up to kiss her, “I’m Joe solomon,” I whispered while we were close, “I’m always careful,”

Rachel drove us back to Roseville, I slept most of the way as I was still under the influence of the drugs from the hospital.

“You know,” I looked to Rachel as we entered the town, “A boarding school isn’t the best place to bring up a child, I’m sure the trustees would understand if we moved in to a townhouse?”

Rachel laughed and glanced over to me, "Now why couldn't I think of such a simple solution like that?”

I knew something had been on her mind to do with the baby but she had insisted it was nothing so I had chosen not to push it until now.

She sighed as we pulled in to the school gates, “I’d have to get the maintenance department to make some adjustments to it for us,”

I rolled my eyes, always so practical!

“Well,” She stopped the car and looked to me, “Here we are again,”

I nodded and opened the car door at the same time as the main door opened. I managed to make it around the front of the car before Abby flung her arms around me, “You’re okay!” She exclaimed as I laughed.

“I told you,” I pulled back and held her at arms length, “I’m Joe Solomon, I don’t get hurt.”

“So you keep saying,” Rachel rolled her eyes as she leant on my arm.

Townsend stepped forward and held out his hand for me to shake, “Thanks Joe, I owe you.”

I shook my head and looked to Abby with an affectionate smile, “Cameron Women hey? Can’t keep ‘em out of trouble!”

Rachel laughed and shook her head, “I think you just go looking for it!”

I smiled and wrapped my arm over her shoulder,

“I found it a long time ago,” I looked down to her, “And she’s not stopped reminding me since!”
