Chapter 24

We’d just got back from having pizza in town when my phone buzzed with some breaking news.

“Due italiani uc…” I read out in Italian without thinking before Macey cut me off.

“English Lizzie.” She nudged me.

“Two Italians have been killed in an explosion in a theme park.” I told her, my eyes scanning the screen, thinking of the chances that one of our friends may have been there.

“A theme park where?” Preston asked me.

“England.” I responded automatically as I continued to read, we were in the house now and an image on the news article had caught my eye, it had been taken seconds before the bomb exploded, there were several blurred figures in the image but two specifically caught my eye.

“Liz?” Macey snapped, I’d obviously missed a question.

“What?” I snapped back at her.

“Was anyone there?” I knew by ‘anyone’ she meant, Bex, Grant, Cammie or Zach.

“I don’t know for sure, the chances are tiny though.” I shrugged, “I’m going to go and check the CCTV.”

I scurried away without looking at any of them and headed up the stairs to the office that I had taken over.

After a few minutes Jonas followed me, “Do you need anything?” He offered.

“I need to find Cammie and Bex.” I told him, “I want you to help.”

“What can i do?” He offered, taking the seat opposite me. With my spare hand I jotted down a car registration plate, “See if you can get a trace on that vehicle, I’m pretty sure it’s the one that Zach got at the airport.”

“Okay.” 

We were both quiet for a few minutes while we worked. The CCTV for the theme park was easy enough to find, it was a case of finding the right area and section.

“Liz!” Macey screamed a while later, I jumped up and cautiously ran towards the shout.

“What is it?” I asked when I found her and Preston watching the news, the television was paused, showing CCTV footage. It was the same frame that had been on the news article but now the figures weren’t blurred out and you could see the panicked faces of everyone there.

Including Cammie and Zach.

“They’ll be fine.” I insisted, “They must be, we’d know otherwise.”

“We need to get on to the estate website.” Macey told me, “This happened around lunch time there, it must be on by now.”

“Yeah.” I nodded, turning slowly to head back up the stairs.

“Is there anything I can do?” Preston offered, “Anyone I could ring?” He suggested but Macey and I just shook our heads, we were all helpless to do anything.

The last time i remember looking at the time that night was two in the morning and there was still nothing on the webpage. 

I must have fallen asleep because Jonas was rubbing my arm to get me to wake up.

“What time is it?” I frowned and took the cocoa he offered me.
