Chapter 55
Zach

I smiled to Cammie as she looked up to me from my chest the morning after we had done the dirty.
"Sleep well?" I asked softly as I tucked a bit of hair back off her face.
"Very," she sighed contently and closed her eyes again, before they jumped open and she glanced up to me, "We did do it didn't we? I didn't dream it?"
Red was creeping in to her cheeks as she asked and I was tempted to wind her up and pretend that I didn't know what she was on about but I didn't.
"Yes," I kissed her, "We did do it last night."
Cam smiled and kissed me back, I was about to ask her if she wanted to go at it again when the phone rang. I cursed in my head, knowing what it would be and hoping she wouldn't beat me to the phone.
"I'll get it," I pulled away to get up and went to answer the phone.
"Hello?" I answered,
"It's me Zach," Our boss answered back, "How's Cameron?"
I glanced over my shoulder as she came in to the room,
"Doing much better thanks," I told him, letting him know she was in the room.
"I need you to come and talk to the Subject again I'm afraid," Our boss explained, "She says she's ready to talk but only to you, I kept a calm face as I locked eyes with Cam, "I'll be there in an hour,"
"No rush, why don't you and Cameron drive up, we can put you both up in the suite ..."
"Any reason for that?" I was sceptical about his actions, our boss knew Matt, Rachel and Joe well. However, that didn't usually involve special treats for Cammie and I.
"Firstly, you may have just had several months leave but it was far from restful for you both, you're young and need the time together," He had lost hid wife when they were both young and partly blamed them not spending enough time together, "Secondly, I owe it to you both,"
We I wasn't going to argue, "Thank you sir, we will be with you this afternoon!"
"See you then Zach."

I explained to Cammie about the conversation, leaving out the reason I was going and simply telling her it was classified, I hated that I was lying to her but it would keep her safer which was what mattered.

As I drove I glanced to Cam, her eyes were shielded by her large dark sunglasses but she had a smile on her face and was singing along to the radio. I reached over to her leg with one hand and smiled as she jumped a little at my touch, "How was last night for you?"
She turned her head to look out of the window but I could still see the red on her face. I shook my head and smiled, only Cam could still be embarrassed after last night. I looked back to her but was greeted by a sight I didn't expect, her smile had turned to a frown and the blush had been replaced with tear stains. She pulled off her glasses to wipe away some of the tears but they were quickly replaced by more.
"Hey," I reached for her hand and squeezed it as I pulled in to the conveniently placed Diner. I killed the engine and scooted my seat right back before pulling Cam across and in to my lap, "What's up?"

I held her tightly as she sobbed in to my shoulder for a few minuted, muttering to her in an attempt to help sooth her.
"I lied Zach," cam swallowed as she wiped her cheek with the back of her hand, "I didn't sleep well last night, not at all,"
I frowned and kissed her scalp, why would she lie to me?
"Tell me why?" I whispered, needing to know what had caused all this. Cam sniffed and wiped her cheeks again, sitting up to look at me properly, "I had another nightmare,"
"What about?" I sighed, "Cam, I know it hurts but I need to know what so I can help," I leant up to kiss her nose, earning a small smile off of her.
"Zach," cam took a deep breath, "What we did last night, reminded me of what they wanted to do to me but they never did,"
I thought about what she was telling me, I knew what she meant to an extent, "What did they do Cammie?"
She wrapped her arms around herself and bit her lip to stop the tears from coming again, "They touched me and told me I was worthless and,"
"No." I shook my head, cutting her off, "You are none of that, okay? You are everything to me and they are wrong!" I pulled her head back down to my shoulder and held it there gently as she cried.
"I love you, it's okay, you're everything to me," I murmured over and over until she quietened. Her breathing was level and shallow, a signal that she had fallen asleep.
I reached to the phone in my door and quickly dialled our boss' number.
"James speaking," he answered.
"It's me," I told him, "We're going to be a little later, Cam remembered something nasty."
"May I ask what?"
"I'll tell you later," I sighed, "It was to do with the Subject,"
"Ah," James responded, "Okay, I'll see you both for dinner and we can talk to Subject tomorrow?"
"Thanks Sir," I hung up and went back to holding Cammie while she slept.

When I started to get cramp in my leg I nudged Cam and murmured, "Gallagher Girl, time to move on,"
Cams eyes fluttered open and she sleepily looked around the car, "hmm?"
"We need to be getting on," I told her gently, "Are you feeling better?"
"A little," Cam nodded and rested her head on my shoulder, "Thank you,"
"It's okay." I kissed her head again, "Just remember that I love you,"
"I love you too," Cam smiled and sat up.
"Come on," I nudged her gently, "We'd better get a move on."
Cam nodded and moved over to her seat, curling up on it so she was facing me. I rested my hand, palm up, on the console between our seats and smiled when Cam took it in hers.
"I feel so daft," she sighed.
"You're tired," I told her, "That won't help,"
"Yeah," she looked at her watch, "When are you meant to be in for?"
"I rang James," I explained, "He said it was fine and could be sorted tomorrow, we are going for dinner with him tonight if that's okay?"
"That'll be nice," She managed a smile.
"Go back to sleep," I squeezed her hand, "I'll wake you up when we get there,"
She nodded and closed her eyes again. I couldn't help but feel partly responsible for her hurting. I should have remembered what sick twisted people worked for my mother. Out of all the people she could have fallen in love with, it had to be me didn't it? The one with the mother that wanted to kill her. I didn't deserve her.
I glanced across to Cammie as she mumbled, "Zach. I love you,"
That reminded me exactly why I was still here with her, loving her ... Because if I left I'd hurt her too much, like she'd hurt me last summer.
"I love you too Gallagher Girl," I sighed, "Despite everything, I love you too."
