Chapter 16
In the Grand Hall Zach stepped up to the podium and a hush spread over the room. I reached for Dad's hand under the table and was grateful when he squeezed it and smiled at me.
"Ladies." Zach started, "You may have noticed that one member of staff is missing and another adult has been gained." He let the fact settle on the students before continuing, "During the code black the other morning Ms Morgan was kidnapped. Yesterday, myself, Cammie, Rebecca, Liz, Miss Cameron, Mr Solomon and Mr Townstead were in Alaska on a rescue mission. Whilst there not only did we rescue the headmistress but Cammie's father."
Everyone in the school knew the story of my father which is why I wasn't surprised when a murmur spread at Zach's words.
"Mr Morgan will be staying with us for the time being and I'm sure that you will make him feel welcome." Zach continued, "As for the headmistress, before we could get to her she was severely beaten. Fortunately she showed no major problems when we were leaving." Everyone knew there was a but coming.
"Unfortunately, upon our escape Ms Morgan was shot in the leg and fell fifty foot down a cliff." Zach looked across the room, "She is in the Infirmary at the moment, recovering from major surgery due to a swelling of her brain." Zach looked over his shoulder to me, "The doctors have assured us that she should return to full health, hopefully with only a small amount of memory loss. We are telling you this because she is your sister and you deserve to know what is going on. We will keep both you and the teachers informed of her condition."
Zach turned and took his seat next to me.
"Thank you." I whispered to him.
"Don't worry." Zach smiled to me as we began to eat.
At exactly ten o'clock my Dad walked over to me, his hands buried deep in his coat pockets, a coat I recognised from before he'd left. I smiled to myself, remembering that Mom had kept all of Dads stuff, "Just incase." She had told me.
"Hey Kiddo." Dad smiled to me, "Where do you want to go?"
"I know a nice place in town." I suggested, thinking of the gazebo.
"Sure, let's go." Dad nodded and we began to walk, "I noticed your mom kept all my old clothes."
"Yeah, she liked lounging around in your jumpers." I smiled, recalling the majority of our Sunday nights, "Her cooking never improved."
"How do you know?"
"It was a deal that every Sunday evening we wouldn't eat with the rest of the school and mom would make something." I smiled, "If it would be edible was a different story."
"I told you," Dad smiled as we waved to the guards at the gate, "her most lethal weapon was her cooking."
"I'm still alive after seven years of it."
We continued talking about our lives as we walked to the Gazebo in the town.
"This is a nice place." Dad commented as we sat down.
"See down there?" I pointed to where the Carnival had once been.
"Yeah." Dad nodded.
"That's where Joe took our class for their first CoveOps mission." I went on to explain what our mission had been and how we, as a team, had failed.
"How did you get caught?" Dad asked as I finished explaining what had happened to Bex and Liz.
"I didn't." I smiled, "Didnt you know my nickname was Chameleon?"
