Chapter 66

“She was why we were always disappearing in those last few years,” Bex started once we were all seated, “She was chasing us for something,”

“What?” Kim Lee asked.

“At first we thought it was me,” Macey announced, and explained about how she had turned up in Boston and they had fought on a rooftop up until the election night party where Abby got shot.

“That’s when we realised it was Cammie she was after,” Liz finished.

“That doesn’t explain why your psycho Mom wants  Cammie?” Tina frowned.

“We’ll get to that bit,” I dismissed them.

“At this point we explained to them what The Circle was- an ancient terrorist group after chaos and control.” Joe explained, “Years and years ago, Cam’s father and I were tracking them, trying to bring them down, they were too big for a full on mission by an organisation. It was doing this that supposedly killed Cammie’s dad.”

“The Circle recruits heavily out of Blackthorne.” I went on, “I’d guess that several of the teachers there are part of it. The CIA knew Joe and I went to Blackthorne,”

“They also knew I spent time as a Double agent,” Joe chipped in.

“When they heard he’d been teaching Cammie they jumped to conclusions, assuming that he was trying to recruit her.” I nodded.

“That’s why we saw the team arresting you?” Mick’s eyes widened.

“They took us out of school for one reason that day,” Cammie came in and moved to the opposite end of the table to me, “To use me as bait.”

“The Circle were there in that theme park,” Joe murmured, “They were following you and I was the only one to know it.”

“Townsend’s team wasn’t interested in my safety, they were interested in Joe,” Cam finished, “That’s why mom blew up at him when we got back.”

“How did you get out?” Eva asked after a moments silence.

“Ironically enough the Circle broke me out when they were moving me to a secure facility.” Joe explained.

“Was that …” Bex trailed off but I knew what she was asking.

“Where you got Preston from,” Joe nodded, “They wanted information, something the believed would be in Matt’s Diary …”

“You took them on a suicide mission,” I muttered.

“You weren’t meant to be there,” Joe shook his head.

“You said I could get your journal if I needed it, we decided we needed it,” I shrugged, “Pure coincidence really.”

“We broke in to Blackthorne and got Joe’s journal,” Cam interrupted, “While we were there Catherine came in with Joe … He’d bought her here to kill her, the cave we were in was a burn room, like the sub levels.”

My voice was soft as I pictured the scene, “We got caught. I fired a shot after sending Cammie out, the place was an inferno … I thought we’d die.”

I looked up as I felt someones eyes on me, when my eyes met Cammie’s she looked away but I’d already caught the hurt on her face.

“How did you get us out?” Joe asked.

“You ran most of the way, though you probably shouldn’t have. When it got too much you collapsed and I dragged you to a car and hijacked it.” I shrugged, “We got here and I thought you were dead,”

“Isn’t that what they told us?” Courtney asked.

“Yeah,” Bex whispered.

“I missed the last week of school because I left.” Cam interrupted, “People were getting hurt because they were trying to protect me from the circle, Abby, Joe, who next?” She shrugged, “I left to find them and get rid of them … the next thing I know is I’ve missed the first month of school and I’m stuck in a convent somewhere in the alps.”

“You all know what went on more or less for a while,” Bex added, “Joe was unconscious in the infirmary, people were trying to get Cammie.”

“DR Steve was using her to get information without any of us realising it,” I explained.

“Make me feel better why don’t you?” Cam uttered under her breath.

“He ran off when he got what he was after,” Joe finished.

"We missed most if the last year to find them and get rid of them," Cam summed up quietly, "I'm not proud of it but it was either that or spend the rest of my life in hiding."

"We arrested Catherine but she escaped, she started the fire. We thought she'd died..." I trailed off, "The rest you've pretty much heard." Macey explained.

"And she's your mom?" Tina looked to me.

"Not like I chose her," I shrugged.

"Townsend's his dad," Cammie muttered, of course the girls instantly took this and gasped. Probably registering the same shock we all had when we found out.

Real mature. I thought with a glare in her direction.

"So she wants an heir now?" Anna looked between Cammie and I, "Are you...?" She trailed off

"Yes," Cam snapped and stood up, "The teenage Gallagher Girl pregnancy disgrace!" She began to storm off.

"I didn't-" Anna started as the door slammed shut.

"She's just stressed," Macey assured her. Bex gave me a small nod and I got up to go after Cammie.

"Cam," I went in to the room we had shared here a few times and shut the door. She lay on the bed with her back to me, I could hear quiet sobs coming from her.

"Go away," she sniffed.

"Neither of us want me to do that," I sighed and sat on the bed with my back to hers.

"I'm so confused Zach," she whispered, "I don't even get why I snapped at Anna,"

"You're tired," I pointed out, "Hormonal,"

I paused and looked down as I felt her palm on my leg, she had rolled over so her stomach was pressed in to the base of my back.

"I'm sorry I shouted," she mumbled, "I was pretty mean to you."

"I'm sorry too," I lay down myself and pulled her to me, “I should have told you that I was seeing her,” I kissed Cam’s head, “Can’t you see though, why I didn’t want her to see you?”

She nodded a little, “Incase this happened,”

“That and a dozen other things,” I sighed, “I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay,” She smiled a little, “I think we should call quits,”

“Deal,” I shifted against her, “Do you want a nap?”

“Yeah,” She whispered, “I didn’t sleep well,”

“Okay.” I stroked her hair and dozed a little while she slept in my arms, right where my Gallagher Girl was meant to be.
