Chapter 9

We arrived in Rome around mid-afternoon, Abby organised a hire car and followed Macey's directions to Preston's new house.

We parked on the curb and got out of the car. Macey went to the gate and pressed the intercom button.

"Who is it?" An unfamiliar voice asked.

"Ms McHenry, I'm here to see Preston." Macey replied.

"Macey?" Preston's voice came down the line.

"Hi, Preston. We need some information?"

"Of course, come in." Preston responded as the gates opened.

We walked through the gates, which promptly closed behind us and walked up to the house and in the front door.

"What are you doing here?" Preston asked as he hugged Macey tightly.

"Like she said," Bex replied looking around the room, inspecting it, "we need to ask you something."

"Let's go to my room." Preston looked over his shoulder as a maid walked past.

"Okay." I nodded and we followed him up the stairs.

His room was painted a light blue, white mesh curtains blew in the breeze coming from the open balcony door that looked out over the sloping vineyard.

Macey took a seat next to Preston on the bed, Bex, Abby and I took the sofa.

"I've missed you Macey." Preston said quietly to her, looking down and fiddling with the blanket on the bed.

"Yeah, you can do all the love dove stuff later." Bex rolled her eyes, "Do you remember a man visiting your Dad in your Sixth Grade year?"

"You'll have to be more specific Bex." Preston frowned.

"This man." I held out the two photos, "Do you remember him?"

Preston examined the photos for a minute, "Yeah, he came a few times that summer."

"Summer?" Abby asked.

"Yeah, why?" Preston frowned, Dad had been announced MIA at Easter, if Preston had seen him at Easter that meant...

"Tell us everything you remember Preston." Bex told him.

"We were having breakfast one day and he was bought in by security. Dad took him to his office. I went and listened at the door, they were saying something about a chip, I think, it was years ago. Why does it matter?"

"What were they saying about the chip?" Abby pressed.

"Erm... I don't know... Possibly something about people needing it, wanting it to bring down a whole group?" Preston frowned.

"What group?" I asked, standing up and going to stand at the balcony door.

"I can't remember, I don't think they ever said." Preston shrugged, "Why does it matter so much? Who was he?"

"He was my dad." I swallowed.

"You mean, that's you?" Preston asked.

"The summer before she started at the Gallagher Academy." Abby told him as I jumped over the side of the first floor balcony and landed on my feet and started running.

About half an hour later I sat in an Olive tree, looking out over the hills and mountains.

"Where are you dad?" I murmured as two voices neared.

"...I really did miss you Mace." Preston said, I looked out over the vines and spotted their shadows moving in the streaks of sunlight that seeped through the gaps in them.
