Zach

Chapter 28

It had been three weeks since we’d left the school, Cam was musing everyone. She’d only just got her dad back after seven years apart and now they were on different sides of the world.

“Right,” Cam broke in to my thoughts as she returned to our hotel room with a world map. She rolled it out on the bed using the tv remote and alarm clock to stop it from rolling up.

“What’s that for?” I asked in amusement as she held out a five pence piece to me.

“Throw the coin on to the map,” She gestured to the bed, “Where ever it lands is where we go next,”

“Okay,” I smiled and took the coin, closing my eyes I flicked the coin and opened my eyes to see where it landed.

“Brazil,” Cam smiled to me.

“Let’s go,” I laughed

“Zach?” Cammie murmured as she leant on my shoulder somewhere over the atlantic.

“Mm?” I turned my head to look to her.

“What do you think about Abby being pregnant?”

I thought about what Cam was asking me, my half sibling would have both it’s parents there to look after it, Townsend would be their for them like he was never there for me.

“I don’t know,” I admitted to her, “As long as Townsend doesn’t mess up with them like he did with me.”

“He won’t make the same mistake twice,” Cam told me, I pulled a face, not sure if I should agree with her or not.

“What you said about kids,” Cam slowly mumbled,

“When we were at my house?” I nodded, remembering the night better than I wanted to.

“Yeah,” Cammie sat up and looked to me, “Did you mean it?”

I sighed and looked up to the white panels of the roof, had I meant it? Did I really never want kids? I’d been so angry, so hurt and ashamed …

“I don’t know,” I finally whispered,

“That night,” Cammie picked her words carefully, “I wanted to tell you something, promise something,”

“You didn’t,” I pointed out.

“I didn’t want to risk making that promise incase something happened,” She whispered, “Incase I …” She didn’t need to finish the sentence for me to know what the next word would be.

“What did you want to promise?” I whispered, looking her in the eye, Cammie held my gaze for a moment before swallowing and reaching up to my cheek. Her voice was soft and quiet as she replied, “I wanted to promise that we would be okay, that we would be better than that,”

I sighed and leant in to kiss her, pausing to whisper against her lips first, “Don’t make those sorts of promises,”

“Okay,” Cam replied as she nodded, a hint of disappointment seeping in to her voice.

“But no,” I smiled to her, “I didn’t mean it,”

Cam slept the rest of the flight until we got off the plane.

“Where are we going?” Cam asked as we jumped in to the Jeep I had hired and headed in to the city.

“To the carnival,” I smiled as we passed a group of girls dressed in short dress’.

Once we had washed and changed I dragged Cammie out on to the street and towards the party. The loud rhythmic music filled the air and people in bright clothes surrounded us as we ground against each other.

Cammie laughed as I spun her under my arm and we moved over to a club whose bar opened out on to the street.

“Can I have a lemonade?” Cam asked me as the barman came to us.

“Two lemonade’s please,” I ordered our drinks and we took them to a table.

“This is nice,” Cam sighed as she took a sip,

“Something we never got to do as kids,” I laughed.

“Yeah,” Cammie looked around, taking in the bright lights and sounds. Cam smiled as the band came over to the bar and began to play around us. We took each others hands and started all over again, dancing against each other as others did the same around us.

We eventually found a fruit stall selling mango and pineapple we each took a few pieces before heading back down the road. I spotted a path that led down to the beach and grabbed Cammie’s hand.

We made it down to the shoreline and I took Cammie in my arms as the music faded. In the dim light still coming from the street her lip gloss shined. I though back to our conversation on the plane and reached up to touch her cheek.

“I love you,” I told her softly.

“I know,” Cam smiled to me as I leant in to her. Possibly for the first time ever our kiss wasn’t rushed or urgent, it wasn’t a kiss goodbye or to reassure her. It was just a kiss.

I deepened the kiss as Cam smiled against my lips, we forgot about everything around us and just made the most of what we had there and then.

We made the most of each other.
