Chapter 33

Cammie

I looked at the black box and up to Zach and down to the box again, he’d bought me something at the jewellers that had been simply too expensive.

I reached out to the box and lifted the lid, a simple silver ring stood out against the black cushioning of the box, a mating silver chain was looped through it for me to wear around my neck, in a safer place when I was working.

I was utterly speechless, as I caught sight of the engraving on the inner side of the ring, I promise to always be here.

Zach reached out to lift the ring, holding it between our faces and letting the chain fall between us, it wasn’t a short chain either, long enough to rest low on my chest … long enough to rest on my heart.

“It’s a promise ring,” Zach broke the silence, “On the plane to Brazil you told me that you had wanted to promise that we’d be okay,” His spare hand took one of mine, “I realised a long time ago that I didn’t want to lose you, but only then did I realise that you truly felt the same way,”

I nodded silently, not interrupting his speech, “Cammie I promise to always be there for you, and I promise myself that, one day, I will marry you!” Zach’s eyes searched mine as he finished.

“Good,” I smiled and leant forward to kiss him, taking his hands to make him fasten it around my neck.

We headed back inside shortly after, to my relief mom and dad hd gone to change the bandage on moms leg and the other two men had gone to get some wood for the fire. Leaving just Abby sat sipping cocoa, out of all the adults it had to be her, the immature one, didn’t it?

“Where’ve you two been?” She asked looking over the top of her mug as I plonked myself down opposite her.

“Outside,” I replied, glancing down to the floor as I did.

“Let’s see the necklace,” Abby grinned, resting her mug down on the coffee table. I narrowed my eyes at her and sighed, sometimes I hated having a spy family.

I rolled my eyes and moved over to sit next to her, lifting the necklace out from down my top and holding it out on my palm I let Abby inspect it.

“What’s that?” Dad asked as he and mom came back in, Zach had conveniently disappeared for the time being.

“My christmas present,” I told them with a shrug of the shoulders, trying to act like it was nothing.

“Her christmas present from Zach!” Abby had to add.

“I’m glad you’ve got him Cam,” Mom smiled as dad helped her on to the sofa, “He looks after you,”

“It’s not like he has an option not to,” Abby grinned wickedly, implying what she would do to Zach if anything happened to me.

I looked down and bit my lip as the door opened,

“Is that all you got?” Dad asked Joe and Edward.

“There’s more out on the veranda,” Joe told him, I ignored their conversation as I got up to get a drink.

“What did I miss?” Zach murmured to me as I got a mug out,

“Just a load of awkward questions,” I hissed at him, angry that he’d left me alone to be quizzed.

“Sorry,” He took my shoulders and turned me to face him, “Really,”
