Chapter 65
“Get inside,” I told Cammie as she jumped off the bike.
“Are you coming?” She hesitated as I propped up the bike on it’s stand.
“Yeah,” I nodded to her and jogged the few steps over to her.
“Do you recon the others…” Cam trailed off,
“They’ll come here,” I nodded, “It’s the safest place we all know,”
She took my hand and held it tightly as we went through the main doors.
“Anyone here?” Cam called.
“Cammie!” Her mom cried and ran down the stairs to us.
“Mom,” Cam sobbed and hugged her, “Catherine was there, she’s after us,”
Rachel pulled back and frowned, “Why now?”
I looked from her to Cam, to Cam’s stomach and it dawned on Rachel, “Please, not the baby.”
“I refused to follow her, now she wants a legitimate heir.” I looked to Cammie as I confirmed what she was guessing.
“Zach,” She swallowed, “She said you already knew, how?”
“I didn’t already know,” I shook my head, “Not until she came to Macey’s!”
“You knew something though?” Cam rose her voice a little, “The way she spoke, it was like she’d only seen you a day or two ago,” Her face fell as she pieced it all together, “That’s where you’ve been isn’t it?” She spat, “You’ve been going to see her!”
“She wanted to talk to me,” I tried to explain,
“She wanted to trick you!” Cam yelled, pulling away from me, “Why didn’t you tell me?” I looked away from her then, ashamed of myself.
“Why Zach!?” She spat, “Because you thought I’d want to come? You thought she’d turn me? Or maybe you thought I wouldn’t cope with her.” She knew she was right as I looked back to her.
“That’s it isn’t it?” She shook her head, “You thought I was too weak to cope,”
“No Cam!” I cut her off, “You were already having nightmares, every night I listened to you screaming her name in your sleep! I couldn’t risk you seeing her incase it pushed you too far!”
“You should have asked!” Cam yelled before storming away.
“She’ll come around,” Rachel offered.
“You’re back then,” Matt didn’t hide his distaste as he walked down the stairs, “Where’s Cammie?”
“Gone off,” Rachel answered for me, “She’s upset,”
“What have you said to her?” Matt growled at me. Of course he had to jump to the conclusion that it was my fault, in his eyes, since I got his daughter pregnant (May I repeat it was an ACCIDENT) I’m to blame for everything that goes wrong for Cammie.
“Nothing,” Rachel saved me again, “Catherine’s after the baby and therefore Cammie,”
“Damn you,” Mat stalked towards me, lifting his fist as he did.
“Stop it Matt!” Rachel stepped in front of me, “It’s not his fault!”
“It’s his fault that our daughter is pregnant! If she wasn’t having his child Catherine would have no interest in her,” Matt had lowered his fist but his voice was still threatening.
“We don’t know that,” Rachel remained calm as she stared at Matt, daring him to challenge her again, "Just go and see if you can get hold of James," Rachel dismissed him.
"You've spoken to him?" I asked as Matt left.
"That's why I was ringing you," Rachel explained, "He rang us telling me she was out and he couldn't get hold of you,"
"We could have got out sooner," I ran a hand through my hair, now blaming myself even more.
“She’d have still been after you,” Rachel shook her head.
“I don’t get how she knew Cammie was pregnant,” I shook my head, “I know I didn’t tell her!”
“That may be to do with someone else we know,” Joe’s voice came down the stairs.
“Who?” I looked to him.
“Remember Nat?” He asked.
I recalled the name, we had tried to get hold of her back when we were both on the run from the CIA and the Circle with no avail.
“You told me about her,” I nodded, “Left the circle and changed her name?”
“That’s her,” Joe’s face was grim, “Apparently she wants back in so I can only assume she’s doing Catherines dirty work to get in her good books.”
“Obviously,” I nodded.
“Where’s Cammie?” Joe asked.
“Leave her,” Rachel shook her head, “She needs some space to cool off,”
“We had a row,” I explained, “I’ve been seeing Catherine without telling Cammie,”
“Ah,” Joe nodded.
“I’ll go and talk to her later.” I looked up as the main door opened.
“Where is she?” Bex asked as she walked in at the head of the group who had been at the party the previous night.
“Safe,” Was all I replied this time.
“Can you explain all this to us now?” Tina asked.
“What’s all this?” Rachel asked, a little shocked and probably slightly regretful that she hadn’t worn a looser t-shirt as that baby bump of hers was beginning to show.
“We were all at the party last night Ms Morgan,” Anna explained, “When that Catherine woman came with her guards we fought them off while Cammie and Zach ran away,”
“They know about it now,” Bex shrugged, “They heard too much, they might as well be in on it.”
“You’re the ones explaining,” Rachel shook her head.
“You coming Joe?” I asked as Bex pointed everyone to the main hall.
“Yeah, why not.” He sighed.
